This has got to be my favourite film of the year. I know some places call it 2013 because it had festival screenings but I'd say it's 2014 because it was generally released then.

What are your thoughts and feelings. Personally I loved the use of cinema verite in the opening act, before I read up after watching it I thought the performances were too genuine and realistic to be scripted and I was right.

This one left me fascinated. Chimeric, mind-melting, visually powerful. I wish more directors exercised this sort of cinema. I guess it's my favourite too, but I have seen little in 2014 nevertheless.

Oh it's totally stunning.
The thing that really sets it apart is the lack of exposition, in that way I feel it tries to present the film through the eyes of a casual observer (not that one would be present in a situation like this).

I've had an itch for weeks to watch it again but I want to save it for the end of the year.

I'm not so sure of its intentionality, but there's a playful perspective through the whole running time in an almost clinic quality, a coldness intersected shot by shot. It looks like the form had been carefully studied to create this unsettling and surreal atmosphere. It's very interesting.
By the way, I didn't know Glazer used cinéma verité technique in Under the Skin. In what way? Could you share an example?

 No.484

Fuck it, I'm going to rewatch it right now.

Obviously ScarJo is asking questions and saying things the man isn't already aware of, so his responses are genuine.

It's unclear whether the man knows he's being filmed, the cameras are hidden (It's like a twisted version of FakeTaxiUK) and from what I have read they were only told about the filming when they reach the house. Before that they were unaware.
There is a better scene where another character talks about how he likes being single.
Likewise there is a lot of improvisation used with other characters like the deformed man, although he was specifically cast for the film I think the dialog is unscripted.

everything said thus far is pretty much on the ball so I have little to add, just that I agree with all of this. Also ScarJo's been doing some good shit recently, Her, and, although I'll probably get crucified for liking it on here, Lucy (sorry I just fucking love Besson's over the top ridiculous, silly action films)

Now that I've missed it's theatre screenings I probably won't see Lucy. It looked spectacular so there's no point seeing it on a 24" monitor in stereo.
Maybe one day if I have a 4k Projector and a 7.1 speaker config I'll watch it.

Yeah, it was really ambitious in many ways and great fun, but hardly a must see, it's nothing especially new to Besson so don't worry too much about missing it.

i thought lucy looked fucking retarded but then reading some other anon's mild praise has at least got me interested to see it.

under the skin is easily the best thing i've seen this year.

How is Mistaken For Strangers? I'm a big fan of The National but I'm slightly cautious because I've seen some pretty negative reviews.

I'm really looking forward to getting the Bluray of Under The Skin, I think it's an interesting take on filmmaking and there's apparently a good amount of Behind the scenes footage, I'd be really interested to see how they went about the hidden camera scenes, and also the sound design since I'm an audio engineer.

when she looked into the mirror did she believe she was human or did she just wish she was*?

why the sudden empathy over a beta kissless virgin anyway?

>*and if so was her empathy for humanity misplaced given the ending?

>Mistaken For Strangers
i quite liked it. i hate the national, myself but enjoy a good roc doc so i watched it purely based on it's reception.

basically, the more the film goes on the less it is about the band. it's a really unique perspective because the brother of the singer is also the director, and he really presents himself and his relationship with the band in unflattering ways - and he also doesn't care for the national. so far my favorite doc this year.

My good negro. Truly an underappreciated film (as is modern Jarmusch as a whole).

I think she succeeded in convincing herself she was human. After her number of experiences that showed her human compassion, like the people her picking her up when she falls, the man who looked after her, the swimmer etc, she wanted to do something that would make him happy so that she could get a positive feeling by reciprocating.

Sandstorm is good but nothing beats this moment:

The use of this song is enhanced by everything preceding it, since all of the music and the sound design is cold and abrasive, this coming in, even on a tinny radio speaker, it's warm and humanistic.
Originally there was going to be no score, and the radio scene would've been the first music in the film so the producers tried to find a song that would be symbolic of her change and thought about it endlessly, then they realised they needed a score and so they thought 'the song on the radio would just be whatever's on the radio' so they turned on a radio and Real Gone Kid was on.
