Anyone familiar with Italian cinema in general? What are some of the must-see movies (from any decade)? I've watched a small chunk going through a dedicated college class but I would like other points of view since there might be some that would trigger Californians.

From what I can remember, I've seen:

Rocco e i suoi fratelli

Amarcord

Roma citta` aperta

Riso amaro

Ive only seen giallo and I assume that's not what you meant. If it is, there are a lot of good lists that are really easy to find.

Off topic but maybe ill finally get a good answer, is there a good translation of Part 5? Your horribly retarded wallpaper suggests you might've read it all.

I haven't really looked but I doubt it. I forget which other parts but there were some awful translations and it seemed like no one wanted to tread old ground even for quality's sake.

Il conformista is a must see. the cinematography is perfect

I don't really know italian film in any depth so my only other suggestions are just look into the big directors, Fellini is always great (see you have some in your list), Pasolini is good, Bertolucci etc.

like the other guy said, there's guaranteed to be some great lists floating about the web

but above all else, watch Il conformista

I really, really like Rosselini's historical films. You can get a set of all but 1 one of them from Criterion. They go hand in hand with the Pasolini trilogy.

But the reaspn they're so special is because they're completely artless.

Italy had a number of unique genres which typically won't get covered in classes but are fun to explore. There's the aforementioned giallo, spaghetti westerns of course, various types of exploitation (typically gore and/or sex), sword and sandal (peplum), and others.

I'll recommend a couple of Italian police films (aka poliziottesco): Milano Calibro 9 and Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion They're among the best of that genre. The second came out on Criterion not too long ago.

You should try some more Italian comedies, OP. They can be pretty funny. Dino Risi and Mario Monicelli are two directors to seek out (if you haven't already).

You'll quickly get to know Vittorio Gassman, who is featured in many of these.

Gassman is a pretty cool guy. I loved I soliti ignoti so hopefully I can find more like it. I watched a more recent movie called Johnny Stecchino that I really liked too.
