This week we will watch something from the French Poetic Realism movement.
A bit of info about the movement:
Poetic Realism was a trend followed and utilized by many French filmmakers in the 1930s, and it possesses a certain style. Poetic Realist films generally exhibit a pessimistic view of society, as they focus on downtrodden characters who experience a brief chance at love late in life but are disappointed again and end life in squalor or premature death. The major themes of Poetic Realism are bitterness, disappointment, disillusionment, and nostalgia. They can be seen as a social critique of lower-class conditions and a general part of the ominous atmosphere in France before World War II. The “poetic” in Poetic Realism refers to the exaggeration and aestheticism of romance, doomed romance, and lower-class squalor that draws attention to uncomfortable truths about society. Rather than displaying realism in the form of a documentary, Poetic Realist filmmakers often filmed in studios and developed their own expressive forms of representation to “create new forms of visibility and new ways of thinking about the world.”

I think for the very beginning, we might start with something more known - as of now there's as much experienced cinema lovers as people that need to be introduced to artsy cinema.
And there won't be a better example than Renoir's La Regle du jeu. I'm actually quite curious what /film/ thinks about it, being considered one of the best films of all time and stuff.

>>745>Renoir's La Regle du jeu>tfw another film club that will substitute a trip to imdb top 100 to people No.752
>>748>boo, some films are considered great by many peopleLa Regle de jeu is not even in Top 250 on IMDb, szachmat.
No.755
>>745agreed, I as of yet know very little on cinema, as with a lot of the people here, starting with something so niche and specific is perhaps not the best of ideas, and I'm yet to see La Regle du Jeu so I'd say that's a good one to start with, introduces those new amongst us to a highly regarded film in an interesting genre and will get discussion and knowledge going.
No.761
Let's watch La regle du jeu, guise.
No.766
>>752That's not really what I've been talking about.
I was under an impression that film club's core idea is to introduce people to new films, and one of the most well known and acclaimed French films of all time definitely does not need introduction, everybody getting into movies will eventually watch it on their own accord.
On the other hand, as far as Renoir is concerned I would be all for it if we were to pick something like Toni or Les bas-fonds from him, they are not only much closer to what the films of french poetic realism looked like, but are also considerably less known so most people will likely give them a pass while going through his filmography.
No.767
>>766good point actually, hence my suggestion of someone who knows their shit running it rather than doing it on vote, were we to do it on vote then we would mostly get the more well known ones and not be introduced to new stuff.
No.778
>>767How about a committee of people knowing their shit. I wouldn't want someones personal tastes to dictate what we watch unless I can be certain he will be (what's the word I'm looking for here)
What about just following something like the criterion collection. Also what do you think of the criterion collection?
No.783
>>778I think committee sounds like the best idea. Things like Criterion, BFI, Masters of Cinema, all of those similar things have a hell of a lot of great films, but they also miss out a lot, so going by any of them we'd miss some stuff. And the stuff that would be especially missed out is the stuff that is most interesting that a committee would be able to choose.
No.788
>>778>muh sophocracyNo, thanks.
No.789
>film club is slowly turning into a criterioncore marathon
No.794
A committee huh…Jonas Mekas was right, it's the Conspiracy of Homosexuals all over again
No.795
>>788fair point, how do you suggest we do it then? It's just really difficult to work out a better way, obviously not have the committee as some ineffable group and be open to suggestion but those here like me just don't know enough to help really.
No.798
I think the Rizon club of Patrician Film Friends should be the committee, who's with me?
No.800
let's do films that take place in (mostly) a single room
my suggestions:
famous->12 angry men
less famous->the 5th seal
pr something else, claustrophobic films for instance is interesting, I like them better per theme than per movement, maybe it's only me
No.802
No.803
>>8025th seal?…it's seventh seal, pleb.

No.805
>>804Ah, my clever ruse has been foiled by the trickery of flags.
No.807
>>795Here another wild idea. We do have a committee but they only create one giant list that is numbered and updated publicly. Every week we let a random number generator pick a movie from the list. Users can still ask for movies to be included and the committee doesn't have that much influence over what is watched that way.
No.809
>>807that sounds like a hell of an idea. Could also use this if nobody's prepared to take up that idea:
http://www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000_all1000films_table.phpand reroll if we hit something like Satantango for obvious reasons
No.819
>>809I think it might be difficult to find people who
a. aren't lazy
b. knowledgeable enough
c. can spare the time
so going by the list would be an easy solution. We would still require at least one person to keep track of which movies have been picked. Perhaps the mod? (I don't know who that is) It might also be nice to still have the option of introducing movies that aren't on the list. This could be accomplished either by appending them to the list (on our side) or we could have a special weekend every month (or something similar) where the movie is chosen differently. That way we could also throw something silly in every once in a while.
No.820
>>819sounds like an idea, especially the special weekend. Not sure if there is a decent list of those lighter, weird, fun, interesting movies that aren't likely to be on a top movies list.
No.821
>>820How about for example a cult movies list. We could take different smaller lists and consolidate them ourselves and then use that.
No.822
>>821well the main problem really is composing it.
No.823
>>807I like that idea we all suggest a film or some shit and watch it and then talk about it after a week or something.
No.824
We could get tougher make a straw poll on a subject horror, cult, doc, and then we pick the subject and we all pic 3 films each and pic one at random.
No.832
A committee will be a terrible idea. Probably suggested by #film.

No.841
Can we please do something other than La Regle du jeu?
I think we should use this as an opportunity to explore less popular works from great directors.
I would recommend The Human Beast.
No.842
I'd be okay with a committee of around 12 posters dictating a theme/director for a week in which folks gather around and watch films centered around said theme/director and discuss it. And every 90 days, someone is dropped/added to the committee so there's always new faces there.
No.845
Since Renoir is winning by a mile, tomorrow I'm going to delete this thread and make one for Les bas-fonds, a less known but fairly interesting film by him.
We will have an entire week to come up with a way for the film club to work, but going through premade lists is pointless and has been tried before.
The best idea is going through film movements and themes, and picking the film to watch through a strawpoll.
No.901
No.910
How is this going to work then for clarification? Some anon or inco will take control if organising an event and then we vote for the films he/she suggests?
No.1023
This is what i was going to suggest.
>Weekly film club thread
>2 films to watch each week
>Films loosely related by a theme
>one is mainstream/accessible/new, one is older/lesser known/foreign.
>OP post contains a mega.co.nz download of the films
>by the end of the thread the discussion will have organically evolved into a direction to explore for next weeks theme (i'm ok with a small group actually deciding the films, but a vote isn't a bad idea either)
I personally always like to compare two completely different films from different eras/ different styles because you find unexpected harmonies rather than the same tired old cultural context that films are always reviewed in and basically just comes down to the majority of anons reading the wikepedia article for a given movement/director and regurgitating opinions. I think this way makes for healthier discussion
No.1027
>>1023>2 films to watch each weekNo. That's too many–not everybody has the time to view that many every week, along with other stuff they choose to personally watch. Film Club will die very quickly if this happens.
>one is mainstream/accessible/newNo mainstream shit. Why?
1. Half of the people participating would have already seen it.
1a. I believe many would agree that film club should be about discovering films new to them, at least at the beginning.
2. Discussion would never evolve beyond anything that hasn't already been already discussed on the internet.
