Depends on what you're trying to do. If you're trying to bulk (AKA gain weight and turn the new weight mostly into muscle) then yes you need to eat enough daily protein while eating over your maintenance calories and working out.
If you were told to take in protein I imagine you were trying to put on muscle mass. But yeah, if you want to gain weight you have to eat more calories than you burn. As a contrast, I'm actively losing weight. I meet my protein goal everyday and work out to minimize muscle loss, but because I am eating less calories than I burn, I am losing weight.
