I did Taekwondo for about 8 years before stopping for about 2.

I'm looking into trying Judo or BJJ now.

Which one should I pick? You guys have any suggestions?

Also martial arts general.

 No.85553

Also considering Kyoukushin if that means anything.

 No.85555

Judo, BJJ and Kyokushin are all respectable martial arts and your choice should depend of the teachers.

I have a small preference for judo, but it's personal.

You can't go wrong with judo. BJJ has a LOT (I did that for emphasis) of McDojo bullshit and pay per belt, however if you find a good teacher it's a good sport.

Kyokushinkai isn't a sport (I think) It's a fighting system and is in my view excellent if you want to be conditioned to become brave, resilient and effective.

A lot of stuff is illegal in BJJ that will help you in reality. It will keep you fit and you can compete, which might motivate you.

Protip: if your dojo is full of fatties or meatheads, leave.

Does anyone have experience with Kenpo? And if so can you share some info about it? Trying to decide if I wanna do it.

I went once. It was a gym full of blokes in green suits doing the same movement into the air and going OOOOOOSE!!! when they did it.

>A lot of stuff is illegal in BJJ that will help you in reality

What is illegal in BJJ anyway? I take Combat Sambo and the only things I can think of is hearing ankle locks and wrist locks are illegal in bjj. Those fucking hurt in sambo.

Thanks, I'll have to look more into this.

I've been really worried about ending up in a McDojo type of place. A friend of mine who did BJJ and I sparred.

I took him down with moderate ease.

Should I look into the master being from Asia?

 No.85619

>>85614

Nah. My Muay thai teacher is a Mexican dude so I doubt race has anything to do with it. Just see if they have a good record/lineage. Though my sambo teacher is Armenian and I think the BJJ guy is a HUEHUE.

 No.85622

just carry a roll of quarters and aim for the face

 No.85635

Judo is good for stand up if you want to use your opponents momentum against them and balance. BJJ is also very good for ground defense training. Basically ask yourself what do you want to train? Grappling standing or on the ground?

 No.85637

>>85614

No, look into the master not being an asshole. Have a look at bullshido. Yes, spelled like that.

That'll give you an idea of what to look out for. Bullshitters after your money, mainly. Also watch out for meat head bullies who will hurt you to show off. No one who is any good will ever do that.

My friend came to visit with his six year old daughter. We had a fight in the garden. He's a BJJ black belt now, but was good then too.

So he's good on the ground and he gets me down and it's not looking good for me.

'Look! Daddy's winning!'

Something had to be done. So I shoved my thumb up his arse and choked him out.

Daddy complained that 'oil checking' was illegal.

My house, my rules :D

>Should I look into the master being from Asia?

Nope, you should search for a good one.

There are very good judokas in almost every nation now, and bjj is expanding too.

I got a groupon for aikido on sale and never used it because it looked too much like the bujinkan for me… I studied taijutsu for about 10 years and the last 5 was spent trying to tailor the art to some sort of use and functionality…

Koryu bujutsu is awesome (and so is gendai) but the problem comes up when you have a bunch of insecure assholes who correlate someone 'playing the part' of attacker (Uke) for them to destroy in a 'real' fight situation (Tori).

Ego goes unchecked, grows, and you also have the typical human bullshit of nepotism and bureaucracy associated with any sort of governing body of 'experts' that have never had their faces punched for more than 1 repetition.

If blood is not drawn regularly, if bones are not accidentally broken, if ego is not bruised, you are not developing a skill that can save your life.

The comments about BJJ i think are fair, although I still think bjj and conventional boxing are a far cry better than non combatitive traditional martial arts like aikido, taijutsu, some forms of kenpo, etc.

Judo>BJJ in general, but if you have a crazy good BJJ teacher near you and a mediocre Judoka, go with the BJJ.

BJJ, specifically Gracie Jujutsu, has the entire Judo syllabus in it technically. However, most schools spend 95-100% of their time on ground technique with little to no standing technique, let alone how to fall.

Judo is more like 80/20 standing/ground, and a massive portion of the art is on how to not get fucked up when someone chucks you face first into the ground.

Something like 90% of fights go to the ground, but (aside from sneaky shit) 100% start standing.

You should pick Plink Plonk because I'm into Plink Plonk and I like to Plink Plonk, and I think that you should Plink Plonk too. Plink Plonk is the best at Plink Plonk. If you train hard enough at Plink Plonk, you will acquire incredible skills at Plink Plonk, which comes packaged with a life philosophy that will make Plink Plonk a part of your day.

I hope that clear things up for you.

Totally agree. Never done kyjellybasrootin but done the other two. For street defense Judo all the way. Mind you that judo had very limited ground defense compared to BJJ. A man who knows Judo and boxing would be a formidable fighter.

I currently attend 10th Planet jiu-jitsu and its fun minus flexibility for rubber guard.

 No.86316

Why the hate for bjj being applicable for street defense? Why is it when we get into these discussions we think of ufc, strikeforce when concerning this. The overall majority that you have an altercation with does not know anything! So saying which is better is asinine.

We ask have watched the effectiveness of different material arts in a street environment and most would do well. Except wing chun lol or kung fu gorrilla style mixed with crane

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

I've taken aikido (karl geis aikido) and looking at this seems like the usual controlled *attacks* there. Now Segal randori with his students are amazing.

Good BJJ - not McDojo buy-a-belt, is very effective 1-1.

Mind you a bit more striking and weapons is what I like. And men. In pyjamas.

No. Find a good teacher.

Here's a little personal anecdote my white, Argentinian friend. I joined a muay thai gym a few months ago. I thought I was pretty decent as I had a pretty good strength base and flexibility. One day, my instructor brought in a friend of his. The friend was there to teach us proper striking. The way he hit that bag was incredibly humbling. It made a loud SMACK and moved so much every time he hit it. That was the day I realized I had a long way to go. Get a teacher.
