A week ago moot (deceased) asked us to send him a scan of an official government ID to confirm our identities to him, and to sign an agreement, if we wanted to continue being janitors. [1] According to him the information would remain in his hands though he "can't make any guarantees", and the agreement said that they can turn it in to law enforcement if need be, or use it against us if "Proprietary Information" is disclosed. It would be nice to have a real confirmation of what his motivations are.
I think moot's most recent breakdown over requiring mod identity is extremely fucked up and a dark sign. Back when the april mod leaks happened, I asked why someone like Redwood is allowed to be mod and why reddit/tumblr/MAL janitors are allowed. The mods are anonymous, that should mean they aren't tied to some namefag identity across the internet. It is unfortunate that moot went the opposite route, it shows how little moot cares about anonymity and privacy at this point of his life.
I hope you will stick with the mod staff and continue running this valuable service. I don't see how moot can cyber detective who is the owner of this board, since he doesn't have access to 8chan's databases and any janitor can get this info.

/b/ has no rules to enforce, ergo there is no need for a specific team to work it. The only guaranteed times content is removed from /b/ is when illegal content is posted. When anons on /b/ (or any board for that matter) report something as illegal 3+ times, the reported post goes into a global queue which all janitors and mods can see and take care of. If a mod isn't checking the report queue and a janitor BRs the illegal post, the ban request is then highlighted and redirected into the global ban queue for any mods online to handle swiftly.
As a precautionary measure, IPs that are banned for illegal content are indexed in case moot is asked to fork over information during a criminal investigation. This was seen in 2008 for example when he testified against David Kernell over the Sarah Palin email hacking scandal. Usually the indexing itself is a fruitless effort because anyone with the gall to post illegal content is already self-aware enough to hide themselves through proxies and VPNs.

I'm personally okay with reenforcing this policy in theory, but moot only sent this email out after shitcanning /a/'s mod without warning. /a/'s mod was notoriously loud with his conservative politics (le lynch Obama face)but he was the one force basically keeping /a/ out of the hand of moot and Co. Can't say what will happen, but I doubt /a/ is going to like it.

I am disturbed by a recent uptick in conversations that run contrary to both. There is absolutely no place for personal attacks against other team members for any reason, for ragging on the community and/or boards, and discussing polarizing/divisive topics. Participating in any of the above – even if you didn't 'start it' – isn't a a valid excuse. Even though you're all volunteers, you should always be respectful and act professionally towards one another and the community.
Does that mean #janiteam should be a completely sterile environment? No, but topics that run the risk of dividing the team by insulting or excluding other volunteers and/or the community should be avoided. Remember – the purpose of the channel is to bring you closer together – not push you further apart.
td;dr: Don't vent at one another, shit on the users, or prattle on about your personal beliefs in the team IRC channels.
This policy applies to both moderators and janitors. If you see anybody violating it, please e-mail me.
