What are subjects that you must know to be knowledgeable about the world we live in?

politics, history and economics?

Experience with the different things life has to offer. Being out in the word and connecting to the people and things that it is made up of. Don't spend your time cooped up alone.

Let's post pdf about voting methods. This document describes two methods for electing a single seat. Both methods detect some majoriarian patterns that plurality voting doesn't, reduce the problem of similar candidates splitting the vote, have some robustness regarding tactical voting, and are still relatively easy to count.

That makes a lot of intuitive sense but are there any examples of where this has proven to increase democratic participation and consensus politics?

Here is a procedure for allocating multiple units of the same thing among several people in a way that takes into account what quantity people wish for and they are free from pressure to tactically exaggerate how much they wish for.

To be precise, the assumption is that when you state a wish for K units, that your implicit ranking of potential amounts you might get is that you prefer getting K units to any amount below that, and that among amounts below K, your prefer to get as much as possible.

Good analyses of alternative voting systems in a way that's easier to understand than past attempts. Automated runoffs are dildos, Approval and Score voting are king.

How to achieve proportional representation with approval voting.

Online service that you can feed data from ranked ballots. The counting rule is Maximize Affirmed Majorities. If a Condorcet winner exists, that is also the MAM winner. The method satisfies the Smith criterion, which is a generalization of Condorcet. It always chooses from the Smith set, that is the smallest set with each member in it winning each pairwise comparison with an outside candidate.

"War is a mere continuation of policy by other means" - Carl von Clausewitz

"Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun" - Mao Zedong

Critical War Studies is a budding field in social sciences that seeks to understand the human phenomena of war. It's primarily studied from the perspective of International Relations, but also incorporates elements of critical theory, gender theory, post-colonialism etc, as well as traditional theories of strategy and tactics.

I'll dump a mix of pdfs and links to articles that was used in a course I took on the subject. In general, the content deals with the topics of "What is War", "How are humans affected by War", and/or critiques of modern and "post-modern" warfare. Frequently mentioned is Carl von Clausewitz, Michel Foucault, Deleuze & Guattari, and Jean Baudrillard.

I'll start of with some chapters from the defining work "On War" by Clausewitz, in which we find the genesis of the important friction between Perfect and Real war, i.e. war as we desire it to be and war as it actually plays out, a distinction that becomes important in the analysis of so called post-modern warfare.

File: 2f3c1157eec9283⋯.pdf (5.32 MB, A. Neuberg - Armed Insurre….pdf)

It discusses the role of armed insurrection in the Marxist-Leninist theory of revolution, analyses a number of insurrections—successful and unsuccessful—with the aim of determining the conditions for victory, and gives detailed information on the tactics of street fighting—ranging from the respective advantages of offensive or defensive action to the best method of building a barricade. One of the authors, Erich Wollenberg, military leader of the Bochum rising in North Germany in 1923, has written a new introduction for this edition (the first edition in English) in which he gives his own account of how the book came to be written, analyses the unstated political background to the various insurrections it examines, and identifies such of the authors as were known to him. These include Mikhail Tukhachesvsky, then second-in-command of the Red Army, Ho Chi Minh, Vice-President of the Secretary of the Comintern, and the German Communist and leader of the Hamberg Insurrection, Hans Kippenberger. The work was assembled by the Agitprop section of the Comintern, headed at the time by Palmiro Togliatti. The book contains detailed studies of uprisings in Reval (Tallinn), Hamburg, Canton (Guangzhou), and Shanghai — to be used by communists around the world.

I've been really struggling with finding decent lists of material to read in some areas I have interest in. I think looking for the programs offered by university teachers is a good way to fix this, but I have no idea how to do it other than googling the institutions, the course, and so on, and most of the times I find nothing.

Is there a quicker way of finding them? Or is there maybe universities that have easy access to this type of stuff available online?

We can also use this space to share stuff like this. Here's a small contribution, a very socialist-oriented reading list for economic students, and one for the history of economic thought.

I know this but it's for computer science only:

Maybe try and find universities that are particularly strong in x or y course, and then find their course programs?

MIT OpenCourseware houses lots and lots of courses most of them having at least a syllabus where you can get the books and goals for it.

edX courses and presumably other moocs(although most have become pay to play) also have syllabuses once you sign up for a course. Most of the ones on edX are free.

Should I bother gathering some STEM notions as a humanities student? If yes, what is useful and what isn't? Should I learn how to code? Wouldn't it take too long for it to actually get useful?

If you enjoy the process of learning a skill, then its not pointless. That being said, some skills might be more useful than others in terms of social usefulness. Coding is pretty useful, and people can learn it quickly, but it depends on how fast you learn that kind of thing. In general I would say certainly try to bridge the gap to STEM fields if you're interested; it never hurts to know more.

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

>Should I bother gathering some STEM notions as a humanities student?

Only what you care to learn and only if you have somewhere you can readily apply it. It does you no good to learn about surgery if you cannot operate on people.

>If yes, what is useful and what isn't?

Don't confuse STEM for useful. Anything can be useful so long as you are able to be hands on with it. That's the only way you can truly learn and make use of your knowledge. Assuming your not doing this for a job, or else you would've majored in it, the most useful things to learn about are those you encounter in day to day life. Small engines, computers, electronics, automobiles, basic STEM topics(classical physics, basic chemistry, algebra/trig), that sort of thing. The equipment, knowledge, and opportunity for application for all of these is readily available and is usually highly fulfilling and you will find a lifetime worth of work to keep you busy.

You can find much less common hobbies or topics. I like HAM Radio for example but you must remember that the more esoteric your topic of choice becomes the less the above benefits apply. For example, HAM radio has a lot of theoretical material and it's very hands on but the userbase is dwindling in light of newer communication technologies so it's less and less applicable to real life. Optics, curiously enough, I've found general knowledge of to be useful. There's thousands of such topics though you have to tailor your interests to suit your, well, interests.

>Should I learn how to code? Wouldn't it take too long for it to actually get useful?

The same can be said of anything else. Ultimately, it's about what you want to do with your time.

Watch the video, it's the autodidact's commandment. Good luck!

Hey /freedu/, could y'all recommend some reading on communistic centralized economic planning. Looking for works that approach it from all leftist perspectives, Marxist, leftcom, ancom, whathaveyou. Thanks in advance!

Artificial scarcity need not be maintained anymore.

Here's a 05/16/17 archive of the Soviet Cybernetics thread on /leftypol/, where literature on past attempts to manage planned economies with computers and cybernetic organization was posted en masse. Mainly, it talks about the Soviet effort to build a planning-Internet known as OGAS and the realized, operational Chilean system known as Cybersyn. It also contains discussions of their own plans to develop such a system from open-source software. Warning: swarm of very long pdfs and advanced mathematics ahead.
