Welcome to Free Education!
The idea is to get a board going where people can come to find free educational resources, and ask others where they might find educational material on a particular topic.Critical War Studies
"War is a mere continuation of policy by other means" - Carl von Clausewitz
"Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun" - Mao Zedong
Critical War Studies is a budding field in social sciences that seeks to understand the human phenomena of war. It's primarily studied from the perspective of International Relations, but also incorporates elements of critical theory, gender theory, post-colonialism etc, as well as traditional theories of strategy and tactics.
I'll dump a mix of pdfs and links to articles that was used in a course I took on the subject. In general, the content deals with the topics of "What is War", "How are humans affected by War", and/or critiques of modern and "post-modern" warfare. Frequently mentioned is Carl von Clausewitz, Michel Foucault, Deleuze & Guattari, and Jean Baudrillard.
I'll start of with some chapters from the defining work "On War" by Clausewitz, in which we find the genesis of the important friction between Perfect and Real war, i.e. war as we desire it to be and war as it actually plays out, a distinction that becomes important in the analysis of so called post-modern warfare.

>>>/science/ here.The Norman invasion of England, 1066
Hello /freedu/cators, this thread is about the Norman invasion of England in 1066, and the Norman period thereafter.
The historic effects of the conquest included changes to the court and government, the introduction of Norman French as the language of the elites, and changes in the composition of the upper classes. More gradual changes affected the agricultural classes and village life: the main change appears to have been the formal elimination of slavery, which may or may not have been linked to the invasion. There was little alteration in the structure of government, as the new Norman administrators took over many of the forms of Anglo-Saxon government.

Looking for interesting reads about north Korea.
Rare PDF's that give unique insight into north Korean culture and ways of life inside the hermit kingdom.
I want stuff, in particular, from North Korea that has leaked out one way or another. Things that you aren't going to find on their webpage and just interesting readings from the DPRK in general.

Something for the Train
Hey there Free Education.

Can anyone upload/recommend a good site where I can get political and historical EPUBS. I will take literally you have
Dialectical Materialism
This is a thread dedicated to learning all about the philosophy of Dialectical Materialism.
Dialectical Materialism is a philosophy of science and nature, based on the writings of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, and the philosophies of dialectics (which have their roots in Hegel) and materialism.
This link is a good start, will post pdfs after: http://www.marxism.org.uk/pack/dialetics.html
Esperanto, the internationalist language
I just had a idea. we should, on this board, start learning esperanto. This language is quite awesome (very easy, complete etc…) but no one is really talking it on the internet.
If we start to speak esperanto, people from all around the world will be able to join our project of /freedu/ , not just people from the western world.
So, I'm searching mate to start studying with me of esperanto. Also, feel free to share anything to help studying of esperanto.
I'll start with duolingo:
Ancient Greek Philosophy (Book Request)
I understand that this is a very specific request, but I wanted to check if there was any copies floating around that I could acquire so that I don't have to purchase it to read it.
The book I'm looking for is:
"Philosophy Before Socrates (Second Edition): An Introduction with Texts and Commentary" by Richard D. McKirahan (2011)
https://books.google.com/books/about/Philosophy_Before_Socrates_Second_Editio.html?id=EmtFGKmWa60C
Does anyone have this perchance? If not, I suppose I could purchase it, but I would rather not.
Meta Bitching
>come to board hoping for free educational materials
>it's mostly just a /leftypol/ version of /pdfs/
Come on, guys. You disgusting communists are welcome to your opinions and whatnot, but it's quite misleading to take over a board like this with them. It's not like /pdfs/ bans leftist/communist content. Take your soapbox there or to some commiebunker .pdf board.
Boards like what this board is advertised as should be more about neutral subjects like maths, fixing cars, languages, agriculture or even weapons. It wouldn't even need political or philosophical threads because you guys and /pol/ are more than happy to share their ideals on other boards. This board has neutral stuff too, but it is quite lacking and outnumbered by the /leftypol/ stuff.
I suppose this is board is a pretty accurate critique on the modern education system, eh?
Before you call me Porkie and throw faeces at me, could you perhaps redirect me to a board more to my tastes?
Sexology/Sexuality Studies
Post documents and infographs on the study of sex and sexuality, including both general works and more specific studies on the biology, psychology, philosophy, and sociology of sex.
Sexual education, consumer guides, porn, and written erotica are discouraged because they tend to come from non-academic sources or are fictional works, but docs that concern theories of sexual pedagogy or the effects of sexual consumerism and porn/erotica on sex and society are fine. Exceptions to this guideline include:
a) historically important works (e.g. the Kama Sutra, the works of Sade)
b) comprehensive, well-sourced works on sex education written for mature adults (NOT Tumblr posts, Oh Joy Sex Toy, introductory texts meant for schools, or instructional porn videos)

Alternative Voting Methods Thread
Let's post pdf about voting methods. This document describes two methods for electing a single seat. Both methods detect some majoriarian patterns that plurality voting doesn't, reduce the problem of similar candidates splitting the vote, have some robustness regarding tactical voting, and are still relatively easy to count.
Language Learning
I'm curious about who here is into language learning, whose good at it, and what are some excellent resources and tricks for becoming knowledgable, literate and fluent in a second language.
Languages and language resources can be related to national languages of socialist countries but do not have to be.
Education and the State
Education is not a right, just like food is not a right. I support what is going on here just like any charity, but the board's banner is most mistaken about the role of education in relation (implied) with the State.Come Visit /hope/!

Standup/Improv Comedy
I'm usually a funny guy when talking to friends, but I've been wanting to learn to transfer that to a set I can do independently of other people on stage, written jokes in all. Alternatively, learning to just be funnier with other people on stage is something I'd love to do, too.
Any of you guys have any PDFs on the subject?

Intro to Oilfield
Tenaris(a HUGE oilfield tubular supplier) is giving courses on edX on the following
Intro to OCTG - Oil country tubular goods, basically pipes for drilling and oil production. Very basic but it's the backbone and iconic to the oilfield.
Intro to running pipe down wells - How the above is used.
Introduction to Steel - From the sounds of it, it's probably concentrating on OCTG metallurgy.
I highly recommend you check it out if you're interested about oil. As of now, week 1 is done for OCTG but the other two will start in a few weeks.

PDF / Infographic collections
Hey /freedu/ I've been asked to repost some content here that I've submitted in a thread for an anarchist urban commune project in Detroit.
Some background, I didn't produce the collection myself. I acquired it in a 50gig plus torrent that was produced by an Anon that had been hoarding PDFs and infographics for years.
I'll submit links to collections via dropbox, but if anybody can share and rehost ITT that would help were I to clear my dropbox in future.
This collection consists of Cooking / How To / Energy & Fuel / Skills & Trades PDFs. Useful basic literature to get started in urban commune projects. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pq6b5bc59cm9z0q/AACpnzejq98C8V-64-w9Hhdga?dl=0
Also an additional website dedicated to aquaponic DIY & Theory as requested in the thread - http://www.japan-aquaponics.com/diy-aquaponics.html
And also a collection on survival manuals, because why not? - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1xtr9bjqg80umy9/AABUpK4S9Dwzcyfln0Ayz3jUa?dl=0
I'll make some further posts with other useful collections from the original torrent, since I'm unable to locate the original thread (or board) where I had sourced it. They may not all be on topic, but I'll give a quick overview and you can disseminate in to other threads if necessary.
Happy reading.
Historical Cartography
Kind of obscure maybe but I think it's really interesting - here is some information on the history of map-making. Maps are a really interesting way to look at history because it shows you how people at that time and place saw the world and their place in it.Anatomy of Revisionism
A classic for anyone seeking to understand what happened to the Soviet Union from a Marxist perspective. Especially recommended for MLs and anyone who maybe lukewarm on the question of Kruschev/Deng (Porky's favorite communists :D)
The author combines a deep knowledge of Marxism with many different and hard to find sources from the Cold War era. Probably a decent work for sharpening the economics skills of comrades frustrated by Capital.

Recommendations of Leftist Literature
Hey /freedu/ first time poster here. A newfag to this board, if you will.
I was wondering what leftist literature is absolutely necessary to read, or what literature you've read about far-leaning leftist ideology/philosophy that you enjoyed and recommend to me.
Basically, what Socialist/Anarchist books should I absolutely read?
This part isn't necessary but I'm also looking for some far-leaning right-winged literature, too. I want to hear both sides of the political spectrum. Maybe some good books on fascism, or Nationalism. Not necessary.
LibriVox
Was told to post it here by the nice people of /leftypol/ , cheers!
Good day comrades
I just wanted to point your attention to this lovely site over here https://librivox.org , that has free, public to use audiobooks available, including lots of political theory.
Here is what they have on Marx
I thought it might help the people on here who always complain about having the attention span of a dead ferret.
If you are good with reading books and have a microphone that doesnt sound like its stuck in your ass, please contribute to the public domain by reading a book and recording it.
Thank you!
meta
There's nothing wrong with being allies with /leftypol/, I'm a leftist myself, but should this board really have politicized banners like this? It's supposed to be for learning, not spreading propaganda, even if I don't disagree with the ideology itself. Good board otherwise.
Pirating your own IP
Hey guys, saw you all being promoted in /leftypol/, glad to see you exist!
I was wondering if any of you had any advice on how to disseminate my own scientific studies (grad student in physical sciences, but arXiv isn't really used by my field) to the public in a way that it can actually be used.
I'm so used to having access to the paywalled garden that I'm not familiar with how to throw my fruits over the wall.

Alright /freedu/Ideas for edu sites and initiatives
First I'd like to say that the idea of this board is awesome, bookmarked. I know the intent of this board is to share material, but I think it makes sense to post what I want to discuss here.
Ever since I first had personal contact witht he Internet I got my mind thinking nervously on the possibilities of learning and sharing knowlege through it. Do you have ideas for edu, specially freedu, sites or softwares?
When Steam came around I begun to think on something like this: Steam can give you "free" stuff if you do this or that, like participating in a vacation championship, etc. They can do this because as a business that relies on having people making accounts there, the relationship they have with their clients is more than straight, impersonal sales, like games used to be sold before steam.
So I thought on something like this: imagine that Gabe sets up paralel to steam an exam system, he could also create a learning system but I find this unnecessary since people could just use anything on the Internet like Khan Academy or Wikipedia. The idea basically is: you get good grades in our exams, you get credits to spend in our stuff. I don't know whether this would be better for people in school age or adults (testing stuff non-related to their area of knowledge). Of course, it would be better that whatever being evaluated must be related to what the person could spend credits on. So for a video game business, like Steam, some areas could be worked like everything related to computers, logics, some parts of Internet, storymaking, design, etc.
Do you think this idea could be developed further? What I always wanted to do is not to make a business then create an edu system paralel to it as if it was just charity, what I want to get at is a system where people will activelly dedicate themselves to go through the exams. Steam simply gave me the idea of doing it in an effort/reward based mechanism.
