Free Ebooks

Have an idea of what you're looking for but haven't a clue where to start looking? Try http://gen.lib.rus.ec/. It is a mirror of Library Genesis and links to millions of books, scientific articles and historical documents, from seven websites. It also has a torrent option.

Sometimes, despite the fact that it is on one of the mirrored sites, it will not show the document you wish to find. It helps to directly search the sites listed before giving up. Additionally, StartPage and DuckDuckGo, provided that you have the document's full name, are quite adequate in finding what you want, assuming that it cannot be found on the website.

Welcome to Free Education!

The idea is to get a board going where people can come to find free educational resources, and ask others where they might find educational material on a particular topic.

Please feel free to attach PDF files of free texts to posts, or links to dropboxes, or just urls where people might find the information they're looking for.

Start new threads for new topics of education, but please check the Catalog to see if anything might already fit into an existing subject discussion.

Because education is something everyone should have access to.

(I regrettably note that I cannot condone breaking the law, and I cannot moderate every file that is uploaded or url that is posted, so what you post is your responsibility)

Recommended reading and art

Dear /freedu/cators,

I call upon us to create a /leftypol/ recommended reading list. I believe that this would be the right place to create such a list.

This issue was prompted in the FAQ section of /leftypol/ but, to my knowledge at least, was never addressed. The old /pol/ has addressed this issues with much success.

The list itself must contain texts that are relevant to the left. (By relevant I mean that it somehow touches upon leftist issues, not necessarily being leftist or anti-leftist.) The literature should address the whole spectrum of the left from social-democratic to anarcho-communist. According to genre the list has to be diverse as well. It should have philosophical, ideological and sociological texts. However it should also contain fiction (novels, poems, etc.) and other non-fiction (biographies, historical accounts, etc.) Likewise the list should contain works from all epochs and periods. Finally we must strive not fall to temptation to create a purely propagandist list.

The list should give the reader the opportunity to approach leftism from all of its sides and give him/her a chance to go explore further.

I have another proposal. We should also attempt to create a list or a wiki of leftist art and artists. Every ideology has its art. It plays a crucial role in the implementation. This fact should be addressed if we are to create a comprehensive resource for leftist ideas.

Critical War Studies

"War is a mere continuation of policy by other means" - Carl von Clausewitz

"Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun" - Mao Zedong

Critical War Studies is a budding field in social sciences that seeks to understand the human phenomena of war. It's primarily studied from the perspective of International Relations, but also incorporates elements of critical theory, gender theory, post-colonialism etc, as well as traditional theories of strategy and tactics.

I'll dump a mix of pdfs and links to articles that was used in a course I took on the subject. In general, the content deals with the topics of "What is War", "How are humans affected by War", and/or critiques of modern and "post-modern" warfare. Frequently mentioned is Carl von Clausewitz, Michel Foucault, Deleuze & Guattari, and Jean Baudrillard.

I'll start of with some chapters from the defining work "On War" by Clausewitz, in which we find the genesis of the important friction between Perfect and Real war, i.e. war as we desire it to be and war as it actually plays out, a distinction that becomes important in the analysis of so called post-modern warfare.

Finding college syllabi

I've been really struggling with finding decent lists of material to read in some areas I have interest in. I think looking for the programs offered by university teachers is a good way to fix this, but I have no idea how to do it other than googling the institutions, the course, and so on, and most of the times I find nothing.

Is there a quicker way of finding them? Or is there maybe universities that have easy access to this type of stuff available online?

We can also use this space to share stuff like this. Here's a small contribution, a very socialist-oriented reading list for economic students, and one for the history of economic thought.

It is unfortunately costly to acquire the Buddhist text; it is, tragically, somewhat of a luxury to have in possession.

Thus, this enumeration will begin with the four major Nikayas of the Sutta Pitaka, the latter (as a whole) forming one of the essential baskets of the Tipitaka. The translation of the first book was produced by Maurice Walshe, whereas the translations of the next three subsequent books were rendered into English by Bhikku Bodhi.

To the intrigued nonbeliever: Read the scripture as if you were reading the Hellenic myths.

To the follower: Through these works, spread the Way to other members of the laity in need of resources.

Education and the State

Education is not a right, just like food is not a right. I support what is going on here just like any charity, but the board's banner is most mistaken about the role of education in relation (implied) with the State.

We have compulsory State-led indoctrination of K-12 that after 100 years has left the average American without knowledge or reason. In 2015 college freshmen have a 7th grade reading ability on average. State education is an abomination that always leads to Slavery to the State. We should enjoy education, preach it, champion it, help each other… but when we talk of "rights" we see in the this era not respect for the individual but entitlements. I hope that the board owner sees fit to remove the misguided banner that has education as a right, owing wholly to the existing subversion of what I hope was a well-meaning sense of brotherhood.

Are there any books out there to help you learn English?

I only speak English and I realized that its kind of ridiculous that I don't have a perfect grasp of grammar. Apparently ancient philosophers used to study this as its own field of inquiry. Thats not me at all.

I don't even fully understand the lingo of languages. Whats an adverb? Whats its purpose? I tried to read Mark Twain's "The Awful German Language" and I had no idea what the fuck he was talking about but because I don't know what an "accusative case" is. I tried to learn Latin and I struggled for the same reason. How am I supposed to learn another language when I don't understand the tools it uses, and I don't even know how my own language works?

Philosophy/Reading Newfag

Hi. A while ago I started reading Max Stirner and was also pointed to read Prodhoun's Property in addition to understand a little bit more of Stirner. I've been reading introductions to Stirner but I haven't actually read him yet. (Just two of the things posted, not as muhc as I like to or should have). Do I really need introduction texts for all this stuff or should I get straight to the meat of these materials(the actual writing itself). Also do I go for the more expensive version of the ego and its/his own or the cheaper one? I don't know if there are differences.

Some girl in my class reads Deleuze and recommended me to read some. I chose anti-oedipus to start with.

I don't have much of a background in reading, much less philosophical readings. With what mindset do I tackle these things? Should I be taking extensive notes or just taking notes what intrigues me and what I'd like to expand my knowledge upon(since I'm doing this for fun and to be better at winning internet arguments)?

History of Capitalism

In order to properly understand the system of capitalism, it's origins and it's tendencies, we should explore it's history. Capitalism has not always existed, it arose from earlier socio-economic structures, and in studying how it arose, and how it has progressed so far, we can understand more about how it might progress in future, and what might come after it…

Also, where can I find educational material similar to Khan Academy which teaches history and economics from a radical leftist perspective? Is such material even available? Khan Academy, along with other similar sites, either conveniently have zero material on Marxism or postcapitalist systems or their material on topics like socialism and communism simplt equate them with the USSR or PRC.

The Norman invasion of England, 1066

Hello /freedu/cators, this thread is about the Norman invasion of England in 1066, and the Norman period thereafter.

The historic effects of the conquest included changes to the court and government, the introduction of Norman French as the language of the elites, and changes in the composition of the upper classes. More gradual changes affected the agricultural classes and village life: the main change appears to have been the formal elimination of slavery, which may or may not have been linked to the invasion. There was little alteration in the structure of government, as the new Norman administrators took over many of the forms of Anglo-Saxon government.

Boards like what this board is advertised as should be more about neutral subjects like maths, fixing cars, languages, agriculture or even weapons. It wouldn't even need political or philosophical threads because you guys and /pol/ are more than happy to share their ideals on other boards. This board has neutral stuff too, but it is quite lacking and outnumbered by the /leftypol/ stuff.

Sexology/Sexuality Studies

Post documents and infographs on the study of sex and sexuality, including both general works and more specific studies on the biology, psychology, philosophy, and sociology of sex.

Sexual education, consumer guides, porn, and written erotica are discouraged because they tend to come from non-academic sources or are fictional works, but docs that concern theories of sexual pedagogy or the effects of sexual consumerism and porn/erotica on sex and society are fine. Exceptions to this guideline include:

a) historically important works (e.g. the Kama Sutra, the works of Sade)

b) comprehensive, well-sourced works on sex education written for mature adults (NOT Tumblr posts, Oh Joy Sex Toy, introductory texts meant for schools, or instructional porn videos)

Standup/Improv Comedy

I'm usually a funny guy when talking to friends, but I've been wanting to learn to transfer that to a set I can do independently of other people on stage, written jokes in all. Alternatively, learning to just be funnier with other people on stage is something I'd love to do, too.

Any of you guys have any PDFs on the subject?

Intro to Oilfield

Tenaris(a HUGE oilfield tubular supplier) is giving courses on edX on the following

Intro to OCTG - Oil country tubular goods, basically pipes for drilling and oil production. Very basic but it's the backbone and iconic to the oilfield.

Intro to running pipe down wells - How the above is used.

Introduction to Steel - From the sounds of it, it's probably concentrating on OCTG metallurgy.

I highly recommend you check it out if you're interested about oil. As of now, week 1 is done for OCTG but the other two will start in a few weeks.

PDF / Infographic collections

Hey /freedu/ I've been asked to repost some content here that I've submitted in a thread for an anarchist urban commune project in Detroit.

Some background, I didn't produce the collection myself. I acquired it in a 50gig plus torrent that was produced by an Anon that had been hoarding PDFs and infographics for years.

I'll submit links to collections via dropbox, but if anybody can share and rehost ITT that would help were I to clear my dropbox in future.

This collection consists of Cooking / How To / Energy & Fuel / Skills & Trades PDFs. Useful basic literature to get started in urban commune projects. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pq6b5bc59cm9z0q/AACpnzejq98C8V-64-w9Hhdga?dl=0

Also an additional website dedicated to aquaponic DIY & Theory as requested in the thread - http://www.japan-aquaponics.com/diy-aquaponics.html

And also a collection on survival manuals, because why not? - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1xtr9bjqg80umy9/AABUpK4S9Dwzcyfln0Ayz3jUa?dl=0

I'll make some further posts with other useful collections from the original torrent, since I'm unable to locate the original thread (or board) where I had sourced it. They may not all be on topic, but I'll give a quick overview and you can disseminate in to other threads if necessary.

Happy reading.

Anatomy of Revisionism

A classic for anyone seeking to understand what happened to the Soviet Union from a Marxist perspective. Especially recommended for MLs and anyone who maybe lukewarm on the question of Kruschev/Deng (Porky's favorite communists :D)

The author combines a deep knowledge of Marxism with many different and hard to find sources from the Cold War era. Probably a decent work for sharpening the economics skills of comrades frustrated by Capital.

Recommendations of Leftist Literature

Hey /freedu/ first time poster here. A newfag to this board, if you will.

I was wondering what leftist literature is absolutely necessary to read, or what literature you've read about far-leaning leftist ideology/philosophy that you enjoyed and recommend to me.

Basically, what Socialist/Anarchist books should I absolutely read?

This part isn't necessary but I'm also looking for some far-leaning right-winged literature, too. I want to hear both sides of the political spectrum. Maybe some good books on fascism, or Nationalism. Not necessary.

There's nothing wrong with being allies with /leftypol/, I'm a leftist myself, but should this board really have politicized banners like this? It's supposed to be for learning, not spreading propaganda, even if I don't disagree with the ideology itself. Good board otherwise.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Rousseau was a prominent political philosopher and educationalist of the 1700s.
I'm going to post some of his work here.

To give you a feel for his angle on things:

"The first man who, having fenced in a piece of land, said "This is mine," and found people naïve enough to believe him, that man was the true founder of civil society. From how many crimes, wars, and murders, from how many horrors and misfortunes might not any one have saved mankind, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows: Beware of listening to this impostor; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody."
(JJ Rousseau, "The Discourse on Inequality", 1754)

Ideas for edu sites and initiatives

First I'd like to say that the idea of this board is awesome, bookmarked. I know the intent of this board is to share material, but I think it makes sense to post what I want to discuss here.

Ever since I first had personal contact witht he Internet I got my mind thinking nervously on the possibilities of learning and sharing knowlege through it. Do you have ideas for edu, specially freedu, sites or softwares?

When Steam came around I begun to think on something like this: Steam can give you "free" stuff if you do this or that, like participating in a vacation championship, etc. They can do this because as a business that relies on having people making accounts there, the relationship they have with their clients is more than straight, impersonal sales, like games used to be sold before steam.

So I thought on something like this: imagine that Gabe sets up paralel to steam an exam system, he could also create a learning system but I find this unnecessary since people could just use anything on the Internet like Khan Academy or Wikipedia. The idea basically is: you get good grades in our exams, you get credits to spend in our stuff. I don't know whether this would be better for people in school age or adults (testing stuff non-related to their area of knowledge). Of course, it would be better that whatever being evaluated must be related to what the person could spend credits on. So for a video game business, like Steam, some areas could be worked like everything related to computers, logics, some parts of Internet, storymaking, design, etc.

Do you think this idea could be developed further? What I always wanted to do is not to make a business then create an edu system paralel to it as if it was just charity, what I want to get at is a system where people will activelly dedicate themselves to go through the exams. Steam simply gave me the idea of doing it in an effort/reward based mechanism.

Fellow anons i made a new board 8ch.net/freetard/ to make provide everybody with anything for free, it doesnt have to be originally for free.

It is new so if any suggestions those would be welcome, and if you have anything to contribute your welcome

So add movies, schoolbooks, software, tips and tricks on how to get free stuff, couponcodes, and if you would like to share your free money making schemes/skillz feel free

I think you would help this starting board a lot and also would bring more attention to both boards

Board Circle

Would /freedu/ like to join a board circle with /skill/ ?
What is a board circle?
Back on the oldish days of the internet, small website/forum owners would advertise each other in order to gain more traffic, and this can be done in 8chan.
What is /skill/ ?
/skill/ is a board where people teach and learn, much like this one, but our board has a unique format of doing this. Instead of doing things by subject, we are more like the /r/ of learning. It is hard to explain on my end, but I suggest you check it out.

Hey /Freedu/
We are making a board to motivate each other to learn and to improve ourselves through whatever education we want to pursue. The basic idea is we report our progress in our specific area, no matter what you decide to delve into, and others come to comment, motivate and offer advice on impovement. We also meet on quakenet webchat irc #ChanTheFuture where ideas can be discussed and where we can organize
also check out our new board /ctf/ if you want and leave a thread with your progress!
