The history of the continent of Africa before the colonial period is very interesting, and because of the scarcity of written sources in large parts of the continent, a relatively unknown continent compared to Europe or Asia.

Great thread OP, the UNESCO books are a great intro into african history(although some info may a little bit out dated).

Here's the volume 1 of Cambridge's History of.

Ajami is a pretty interesting language too:

http://www.bu.edu/bostonia/summer09/ajami/ajami.pdf

> "census takers trek from village to village counting the people who read and write the country’s official language: French… almost all villagers are pretty good readers, albeit of a language that happens not to be French. Instead, the people use a centuries-old writing system that applies modified Arabic script to a phonetic rendering of their language… The language is called Ajami, and it is used in written communication in many countries across a swath of Islam-influenced sub-Saharan Africa."

Not an Ancient language like >>614 or anything, but it does cast some misconceptions about literacy in Africa in a new light.

this is me

I forgot to add, this is written by Clyde Winters, he's a notorious afrocentist(not that there's anything terrible about that when discussing african history) that claims people like the Olmecs and Sumerians were black.

> claims people like the Olmecs and Sumerians were black

> not that there's anything terrible about that when discussing african history

Well, getting it wrong might be pretty terrible, for a historian.

But I suppose what defines "black" is pretty subjective and arbitrary. I can kind of understand the Sumerian assertion but how the hell does he justify thinking the Olmecs were black-african? I mean, they're from Central America.
