Well, I think one of my friends might finally be drifting away. I've seen it coming for a while but it really hurts right now, since we had just started getting along again for the first time in months.

Moving past this kind of stuff has never been easy for me. Hopefully this time around I don't spend the next year getting drunk and bawling at movies.

How did it end up like that? You could drag pizza across a public washroom floor, freeze it for seven years, and it would still be edible by the end.

Wait….how many alcoholics do we have?!?

I got myself drunked out last Friday. After school party. Our oldest lab tech was retiring so we threw him a party. Our German wine-loving colleague brought some wine. I drank a glass. I'm mostly chink *and* partially allergic to alcohol so that was fun. First bus ride I've ever had where I was actually drunky. Was planning on writing on my tablet on the way home but couldn't do it, so I shoved my tablet in my bag and just stared at the ceiling until I got off. Fun times.

 No.430

Well the person you're quoting is not an alcoholic. I used to have a no-alcohol policy altogether, until just last year. Then I started trying different beers, wines, liquors, and so on with my father, because alcohol is a pretty big hobby for him. I still drink rather sparingly though. Mostly only when we go out someplace together. I did get somewhat drunk a couple of times last year, but I don't make a regular thing out of it.

Alcohol isn't good for my quest for fitness though, so I've cut back on what little I do drink.

I seem to recall Glass liked to get totally plastered on weekends. Maybe that's of whom you were thinking?

 No.446

Came in to work today, and as soon as I walk in a dopey, frat rock version of Danny Boy starts up on the store radio. It's going to be all day with this. I hate St. Patrick's Day. What are you guys up to?

 No.944

Just working on my dissertation. Got a few beers for later. I don't really like St. Patrick's Day either. Plastic Paddies are the worst.

 No.964

>>944

Plastic Paddies? Didn't know there was a term for them, but I'd have to agree: they are the worst. Doesn't help that most of these shamrock-fuckers have about as many ties to Ireland as I do to Arendelle.

What’s your dissertation on?

 No.972

>>964

Too right. I'm studying maths, so my dissertation is sadly nigh-on impossible to explain properly in layman's terms. I've spent the past two days going over it with a fine-toothed comb looking for errors. If you know a bit of maths, I could have a shot at giving you an overview.

 No.984

>>972

Well I'm not a career mathematician, so I doubt I'd be any help checking it for errors. But if you wanted to tell me about I'll try to wrap my brain around it anyways. Unless that would be too much of a diversion. I don't want to waste your time if you've important work to do.

 No.1000

>>984

It won't be a waste of my time, I'm relaxing tonight anyway. Thanks for your interest. Let me know if I need to get simpler or define any terms for you.

In topology, there are some spaces which are called simplicial complexes. These are spaces that can be built by gluing things called simplices together. There's one kind of simplex for each spatial dimension: a simplex in 0D is a point, a simplex in 1D is a line, a 2-simplex is a triangle, a 3-simplex is a tetrahedron, and so on. Think of simplices as generalisations of triangles to any dimension.

From any simplicial complex, one can build an object called a chain complex, which encodes information about the topological space in question, and this information gives us a handy way of distinguishing topological spaces at a glance. My dissertation's primary concern is a vast generalisation of this correspondence between simplicial complexes and chain complexes: it turns out that this whole story goes beyond topology, and the correspondence exists in a really wide variety of circumstances.

I'm not sure what level you're at here, but I can break things down further if you like. Thanks again for your interest.

 No.1040

>>1000

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm still at work, so I've been trying to read through that in between closing the store down. And no need to thank me; you're the one good enough to try to explain it.

You're work sounds interesting. I'd be lying if I told you I had an absolute grasp of it; I just don't really have the background knowledge necessary for that. But you did a fair enough job simplifying it for me to have something approaching a layman's understanding of what you're talking about. Thanks for taking the time to share. I'm curious as to what other circumstances the correspondences you alluded are found.

Nice 1,000th post, by the way.

 No.1138

>>1040

No worries. Yeah, the background knowledge is always the tricky thing with maths. If the person you're speaking to doesn't have it, everything you say will probably feel kind of abstract and arbitrary. Thanks again. Kind of odd for a thousandth post, but fuck it. It's /soc/. /soc/ was made for rambling.

 No.1166

Yeah, I have noticed they've become the hot shit in recent years. They've pretty much completely taken over the beer menus at many of my local bars, with maybe one or two darks if I'm lucky.

For someone who hates hoppy drinks, it kinda sucks.

 No.1200

>>1197

>>1198

Never saw any episodes, but I have to admit, the hype around the new season has me curious. Is the show any good?

 No.1201

>>1200

Eh.

Vincent D'Onofrio is fucking amazing as Kingpin, but otherwise the show is pretty meh. It's very slow to get interesting at all, and when it finally starts to go somewhere in like… the last episode, everything gets concluded all at once in a really rushed, half-assed kind of way.

Also, Daredevil doesn't have his actual costume until the end of the final episode, and… It sucks. It sucks so hard. It's like someone's shitty cosplay. The title/theme song sequence is really cool (as is the song itself), and the Daredevil they show during that sequence looks interesting, but the costume that appears in the show is just awful. I would have preferred if he had just kept dressing as wannabe Zorro through the whole thing.

 No.1202

I see. I took a look at Hopf algebras and noped the fuck out. I do not have a mathematics background.

I think there are a lot of applications for simplex/topology study in materials engineering and physics though, since the mathematical formulation and prediction of absence is highly significant for the measurement of porosity, metal mixing, and possibly layer bonding, a key problem for the advanced alloys needed for future developments in air and space vehicles.

Pic related is of sintering grain growth, a solved problem (hence the nice picture). Intuitively, this looks to me like a Rips complex, and the grains are essentially increasing their search distance until the final microstructure represents the trivial fully connected topology, the holes seen previously becoming the pores. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the exploration of this topic might yield new understandings of materials solidification, which is currently poorly understood regarding advanced alloys.

What >>1252 said. That was actually why I asked who chose the movie. If he picked it out, and demanded that you clear your schedule to see it opening day, and has been obsessing over it ever since, despite your lack of interest, it means he most likely picked the movie for himself, rather than for you. He most likely had a particular interest in that movie before he even saw it, and since the movie's primary defining feature is anthropomorphic animals, there's a good chance his interest was based on said anthropomorphic animals, which means there's a good chance he may be a furry, and just doesn't know how to tell you, or is embarrassed to tell you.

I've only fallen deeper in love with her.

I would gladly die tomorrow if it meant that I could just be with her for one night. One night to hold her in my arms, one night to tell her how much I care for her.

She means so much to me. There is a big, empty space in my heart that only she could ever fill. There is a pain and hurt that only she could heal.

I love her so much.

Good night /frz/. I love you.

Have you at least tried to subtly communicate to him that you're tired of his shit? Nonverbal language can be your friend, when it's not busy being your enemy. Show your disinterest by speaking tersely or checking your phone whenever he starts sperging out. If he picks up the hint, great. If he picks up only on your behavior and asks you what's wrong, you can then tell him that you're feeling a little off about his obsession with Furtopia, and that you didn't know how to bring up the subject with him. He'll understand that. He might not like it, but it's probably the most low-key way to confront him if you feel you must.

>>1255

Do you feel comfortable giving any specifics here? I've talked to you quite a bit in draw threads, a fair amount in /soc/, and I'm just curious to know more about you.

 No.1299

>>1297

Goodnight anon, I love you too.

 No.1307

>>1286

Have you tried talking to him in-depth about this instead of socially awkward strangers on the internet? Dialogue and compromise are the keys to any healthy relationship. And in this case, given how out there what he's doing, you can almost certainly get your way. You will never, ever, ever meet Mr. Right. What you can get is Mr. Good Enough. It may be the case that your differences are irreconcilable, but you will never find out without a good talk. Couples fight a lot for a reason.

>>1298

Whatever you do, don't do that. What guys tend to hate is passive-aggressiveness, and if he's genuinely a sperg, then not only will he not get it, he'll resent it. Even ordinary guys don't think too highly of it; do you know how many bro talk sessions are about the missus suddenly going insane? Do you want to be seen as an equal partner or a hysterical talking vagina? Being the subject of the infamous "bitches, am I right?", which, despite all efforts against it, is dropped regularly in guy talk, is not something to aspire to.

 No.1313

>>1307

Guys are used to passive-aggressiveness. Dialogue and compromise are ideal, but not realistic in most relationships. The "missus suddenly going insane" is not the same as the "missus going quiet whenever I mention my Disney obsession". That nigga isn't gonna drop his fetish through a long talk. You gotta play the quiet game. If he's not completely autistic, he's gonna notice.

 No.1323

>>1298

>I'm just curious to know more about you.

I don't know, what did you want to know?

 No.1324

>>1298

I have kind of been doing that. Not intentionally, but just because I don't know what to say when he starts doing it. So I always go quiet or change the subject, or I don't answer his texts, or whatever. So far, he doesn't seem to be noticing. I might need to be a little more blunt with him, like >>1307 was saying, but I also don't want to seem like I'm flying off the handle over it.

 No.1328

>>1323

How old were you when things started going downhill?

Any particular incident you can point to?

What happened to your parents?

>>1324

Well, you could always move up to saying something like, "wow, you sure are crazy about that movie." He should settle down if he realizes how other people perceive him. Does he have any normal friends? How did you meet him, anyways?

 No.1329

>>1313

>Guys are used to passive-aggressiveness.

Of course they are - did you not notice me mentioning how often it gets bitched about? Consider the following: men are direct with each other. That's what they're used to. That men are accustomed to women being passive-aggressive is true, but hardly relevant. Men are used to women taking forever to dress too, and that's the subject of constant mockery and grumbling.

 No.1330

>>1329

The jury's still out on whether or not anon's bf actually has any male friends.

Men are used to other men being direct, and they're used to women being indirect. If anon openly confronts her bf about his unbearable faggotry, chances are he's gonna see THAT as far more insane than her trying to subtly steer him away from the constant Zootopia references.

 No.1331

>>1328

We work together. I don't really know much about his friends. He seems to get along with the other people at work, but he's usually really quiet there. He doesn't talk about any friends outside of work, so I don't know how much time he spends with friends, or how many friends he has.

When he first started working there, he would always hold doors for me or carry things for me, but he would never make eye contact, and he would always mumble when I would say thank you. Then one day he friended me on Facebook and told me he had written a haiku about me.

 No.1332

>>1328

I was 10. No particular incident happened until a year later. But by the time September 2001 came around, I felt things get noticeably worse.

My parents were physically abusive, and possibly sexually abusive as well, but I was too young to remember and it was never proven. I've spent most of my childhood in the piece-of-shit foster care system.

 No.1333

>>1330

Are you a woman?

 No.1340

>>1330

>>1324

Just to confirm my suspicions, I asked some friends how they would feel about passive-aggressiveness. The *best* response was that he would ask, but that he would hate it. The worst response was an instant breakup. Everyone disapproved.

>>1333

Nope.

>>1331

You don't seem to know a whole lot about him. How long have you been dating?

>Then one day he friended me on Facebook and told me he had written a haiku about me.

Topped kegs. That's weird but kinda cute. I think >>1340 is right and I was wrong. You should approach him directly but maybe don't do it in a deathly serious "we need to talk" manner.

 No.1354

>don't do it in a deathly serious "we need to talk" manner.

But that would be hilarious.

 No.1355

>>1341

It probably should have rang a few alarm bells, but I thought he was just quiet, and maybe a little bit awkward. He seemed like a really nice guy though. In fact, I still think he's a really nice guy. I still want to be with him, even if he annoys me.

>>1353

Since December, so a few months now.

I think you're right. He's not picking up on subtlety so far, so I think I'm going to have to have a talk with him about it. At the very least, I'd like him to quit calling me Carrots, because it's kind of weird that he's associating me with a cartoon bunny.

That's a bit of an eerie coincidence. I've been dating my current gf since December, I wrote her a haiku, I took her to see Zootopia on opening day, and I told her she was a lot like Judy and started jokingly calling her Carrots.

Is that a weird coincidence? Yes, yes it is.

Out of all the pictures I have of her, this kind hurts me the most.

I always imagine our life together. Of waking up next to her every morning and seeing her at the end of each day. Of holding her close to me as we tell each other about our day.

I imagine us having a family, and what a wonderful mother she would be.

But none of it will ever, ever happen. All I have are my own lonely thoughts.

Good night /frz/. I love you.

Room looks a little barren. You may want to hang some sheets on the walls or something to cut down on echo/white noise. In a heavily furnished room, it's not that big of an issue.
