It's very formula-ish, but not any more than Pokemon is. I forgive that because it's actually very interesting and has way better plots to offer than Jewelpet.
As far as generic anime tropes go, it could be much, much worse. There are rarely moments where you think "oh, THIS episode again?" or episodes that trail off completely/only exist as filler.
I also have the slightest feeling that there is some meta-humor in this series. Almost as if the writers are alluding to the state of character/business culture in Japan. Like when Komasan gets promoted at the toy company for his genius even though he's completely clueless and not actually being creative. Or they way they all keep talking about "Yolo Watch"
