Second Life is bad _because_ of the user generated content and the fact that you have to download large quantities of files while playing. It makes for buggy gameplay. Shit like jigglebones, lighting, and etc won't fix it.

Aged engine aside.. one of it's main issues is the vast amount of newbie content makers who think 100k poly smooth with no form of optimization makes a quality product. Also bad scripts and poorly optimized textures

So, it won't simply be a matter of making a new secondlife.. you got to find a way to breed in the idea of quality into the base users at the start so such ideals fester into a common habit.

Like, in IMVU of all places for example, you can see yours and everyone elses KB amount when you hover over their name, so people were constantly nit picking at one another to keep their KB count down under 2k to help prevent lagging, not sure how much that mentality had stuck since, but that's one example of community enforced standards :v

Everybody has tried making next gen SL clones and they all have failed for various reasons. They're all inherently doomed to failure anyways since generally the kind of people that play SL are the kind that have heavily invested (especially monetarily) into it and don't wanna start over again or whatever. The only thing that's gonna have a chance at succeeding SL is LL's own Project Sansar.

Well they are more than capable of completely rebuilding SL from the ground up. Just new lighting systems, shaders, a real physics engine. They've already got the ground work there, they just have to keep building it up, it's come a long way since 2006 and I even heard they are finally remaking the skeletons.
