No, I was born into an atheist family. But I think the idealized concept of religion serves a good societal function. Human beings, like other animals, have a biological impulse to form groups, helping people in the group while hurting other groups (the "you can only sympathize with 150 other individuals" thing). Religious concepts look past that to try to create a universal system where all humans are part of the same group. Christianity states that everyone, not just Christians, either go to heaven or hell, just as the various Hindu and Buddhist sects believe that everyone is caught in a cycle of reincarnation. The system is meant to encourage morally good behavior.
Of course, being part of a religion doesn't make the instincts to form into groups and compete with other groups disappear. This can cause religious adherents to lose sight of the main message of their belief, which is usually altruistic. Individuals who have especially competitive personalities can use religion to divide and control people, causing great human suffering. The worst part is that they do this while still completely believing in their religion.
The balance of these two impulses is the human experience, and I don't think we'll ever be free from it unless the technological singularity fundamentally changes the individual or something. It's why the priest/imam can encourage and fund the building of schools and orphanages, and then bless the crusader/mujahid as they go off to kill each other.
We like to point to Islam as an example of religious violence, and yes, Muslims on average do much more violence in the name of God than Christians. This is not a product of Islam itself, but rather of the distinct histories of Christianity and Islam. Christianity had the benefit of already having the Roman Empire to use as a vector, so much of the violence during initial expansion was internal, such as Emperor Constantius II's 337 decree that punished paganism with death, and the numerous Christian zealots that destroyed pagan symbols. Islam started outside of any empire, and so created it's own with proselytizing conquest. Holy wars were waged by both faiths. The general histories of the two religions diverge with a process that started with Protestant Reformation and was completed with the Thirty Years' War; these events ultimately made religion secondary to the state. After Catholic France joined Protestant countries in fighting Catholic Austria, it was obvious that it didn't matter who your god was, only who your king was. In western thought, the state and later nationalism replaced religion as the ideology that united and divided humanity. Conceptually, there's no difference between a Serbian soldier executing Croatians and an ISIS soldier executing Syrian Christians.
I guess the tl;dr of this is that Jesus was a nice guy with some good ideas. A lot of people try to understand and follow his ideas, but sometimes their natural instincts get in the way and they end up hurting people.
