Welp, why is there no good choice of DE/WM in the glorious land of GNU/Linux in 2014?

All of them are shit.

Most DEs/WMs are good enough wtf is your problem OP I don't want updates or gimmicks to make it more impressive or feel like its constantly being worked on damn I'm fine like this. Leave me and XFCE alone holy shit they control us because of you.

KDE is the best DE for normalfag (nobody on any chan )Windows baby ducks.

xmonad is the best WM. perfect multiple monitor support without even trying.
compiled binary is actually very small and efficient (despite the big haskell dependencies).
the contrib package adds a shitload of features to use.
the sky is the limit for xmonad.

it has two downsides.
haskell dependencies take up space on the harddrive.
so far no waylandmonad.

i3 is a tiling wm and it's pretty easy to use. The workspace management automatic, just like Gnome. The configuration syntax is pretty simple and self-explanatory. It runs i3bar automatically and it has the usual time and date, battery and notification icons (along with some extra stuff like load average and network activity). It's fully configurable and uses only 7MiB of RAM. Use nitrogen, xsetroot or similar program to change the background (i3 doesn't do that for you, but you can use .xinitrc or .xsessionrc). It's also possible to use it with XFCE, replacing the panel and window manager.

The downside is that it doesn't have the a11y features of KDE or Gnome. If you use those features, stick with an accessible DE and download more RAM. Some menu accelerators don't work in the default config, so if you use those then just change Mod1 to Mod4 in the config (or use other solutions mentioned in the FAQ).

Windowmaker friend.

You can make it look more modern, but a UI is made to get things done, not look pretty.

Tiling WMs aren't try hard at all either, but I can understand not wanting to learn how to move around with them.

Also, a lot of textmode programs are great and far easier to use than GUI based ones, so maybe not as a replacement, but I would make use of the TTYs

 No.829

Maybe you'd have a better time, OP, if you didn't care about the politics of your DE. I use GNOME even though I do not agree completely with it's Outreach program. Why? Because I'm a fucking adult.

Open source software shouldn't depend on money in the first place. So what if the gnome project invested their money in the wrong way. Also outreach for women is necessary. Can't comment on the effectiveness though.
Considering most of GTK+/GNOME development is now dictated by Redhat anyway, the OFW shouldn't worry you.

The global menu bar / indicators are really nice. This can be ported to gnome2/mate/xfce though.

This guy gets it. It's the most RAM-hungry process, but the whole system is far below 512MB on my setup.

In the end, a complete desktop -- more features than any of the competitors -- and it Just Werkz. FOSS without Poettering.

That said, ALSA still bothers me three or four times a year when I try to use HDMI audio (and have to hack up an .asoundrc file), but that may be because I'm a lazy retard. It's better than the alternatives.

6 months later and OP is still completely right. KDE is the only usable option and it's a joke compared to what KDE 3 was at the end of its life. Truly we live in dreadful times, especially since KDE5 (fuck you, name autists) is going to require systemd parts to actually work at all.

No you're not, as seen by your lack of reading comprehension skills.

Dayum, maybe mate truly is the future after all. Will they start developing new programs too or are they simply going to keep mate in its "vanilla" frozen state with maintenance? I'd love to have a KDE-free krunner or maintained kupfer as well as a notification stack.

I'm actually using LXQt and it's a really nice Qt5 desktop. Too bad that Qt5 has no Gtk theme management. For fuck's sake. When Gtk 3.0 landed, all the faggot devs got together to support it in a heartbeat, but Qt5 gets no fucking love whatsoever. I'm using i3, and I love it. People who complain that tiling wm's are too hard should really try it. I didn't like awesomewm when I tried it, but i3 seems so natural and easy to use, I'd really recommend it to everyone.

Learning to use mod+shift and the arrow keys to move windows is really no more difficult than using a mouse. If you're worried that using keyboard keys to manipulate your computer is scary or difficult in some way, then don't be. It's really simple and cozy, and dmenu is excellent.

All the time and resources spent on cinnamon, unity and other GTK3 desktops could have been spent adding features to MATE, which was already working and stable.

Instead, we got re-inventions of the wheel.
