 No.2803

How essential is this for building a computer

 No.2804

>>2803

It's not essential. But it's cheaper than pretty much any computer component, so why risk it?

 No.2805

>>2803

I bought one 10 years ago for my first computer build. The fucking thing was about as long as the one in your pic, but still kept detaching every few minutes as I was fiddling around.

I've built three computers since then and haven't used it, and I've never had a problem. Actually, four computers.

I do live in a continental (humid) climate, and I think it's harder to generate static electricity in humid climates. I build my computers while nude and touch something I know is grounded before reaching for new components. Haven't had any problems.

So I'd say non-essential as long as you're reasonably careful and don't shuffle around on a carpeted floor in wool socks while assembling your computer.

 No.2807

If I sit on my concrete floor in the kitchen in my house with like 60% humidity will I be good?

 No.2809

>>2807

Probably, but as long as you're still standing on the concrete floor, you'd probably be more comfortable assembling it on the counter, unless there's some reason you can't.

I'd still recommend nudity. It will show the computer that you're unafraid.

 No.2810

>>2809

Thanks anon, I'll be sure to do that, I want it to know that I'm not afraid and willing to never keep secrets from it

 No.2871

Is it essential.

Static discharge can and will fuck with your internals in ways you may not visibly see. Any decent hardware tech knows to ground yourself with that strap and then the computer itself.

 No.2899

Never used one, never had any problems related to not doing so.

 No.2900

Can't you just touch the case and/or PSU every so often? I've never had any problems.

 No.2913

>>2900

That works until you touch something other than the case or PSU.

Look up the YouTube video from IBM about static discharge.

 No.2914

I've built computers since 1999. Haven't used one, haven't burned out a part.

People are just paranoid.

 No.2915

I've never used one. I wouldn't say it's worthless, but if you're careful you shouldn't need it.

Get it if you're worried.

 No.3506

>>2809

Should I be erect or not?

 No.3589

Completely useless. Just touch your case or a radiator before building your stuff. Electrical discharges can really fuck up electronics tho, heard of a friend who fried his mobo when trying it intentionally

not "required" but not worth the risk, remember to wear fewer clothes and to touch the case/PSU before touching any sensitive components (CPU/Mobo/Memory)

I've killed components due to static before, it's a real thing.

 No.3634

>>3506

How else are you going to stick your dong in the ethernet port?

>shootingpoolwitharope

 No.3653

Is this some epic maymay?

 No.3713

Yes

 No.3716

>>3632

Did they just recommended putting the component on the static bag? Do not do that.

 No.3724

>>2805

>I build my computers while nude

what the fuck

 No.3739

>>3724

>Year MMXV

>Not building your computers wearing nothing but anti-static gloves.

Come on annon. Get with the times.

 No.3894

What is this?

I was planning on building a computer, but I don't know much about it.

I assume this is to prevent static electricity?

Yes

 No.3963

>>3894

Yes, it's for preventing static electricity

 No.4000

I've carried motherboards up and down carpeted stairs in socks and haven't had an issue EVER.

 No.4031

ive built computers beyond counting and never even though about static electricity since the first build, where my dad was present and kept reminding me. never had a problem.

I have had one mobo come DOA -- maybe I static shocked that one to death. But I really doubt it.

 No.4085

>>2803

its fucking retarded, you have a better chance at getting stuck by lightning than frying your pc with static

 No.4134

>>3632

call me a retard but I just destroyed my Macbook pro upgrading the RAM on it with static

 No.4136

>wrist straps are less than $5

>wrist straps are a conspiracy to make you look funny while building computers in your basement

What in the actual even am I reading here?

 No.4299

If you want to build your computer on a plastic or wooden table while standing on carpet wearing polyester socks and clothing, then yes. Otherwise just be careful

 No.4324

use your other hand to touch a metal part of the case. it will ground you just the same. this is what I teach all my disciples
