When I make post's about internet security on my home board I get told to come here, so here goes.

What should I be using to protect myself online from being tracked etc?

I currently use a VPN (cyberghost) and ghostery, but I've heard people don't like it much. I use tor every now and again to browse clearnet.

Is there a definitive list of stuff to use and avoid? I've downloaded 'disconnect' but haven't been using it long.

Delete ghostety, this is almost adaware.

Install privacy badger and subscribe to a good privacy list in your ublock origin.

Privacy-tools.io had some more tips (also for VPNs).

Never use Cyberghost - they sold their customers then and they are willing to sell them again. Oh jeah, and pic related - that's their customers, fags like you. But you wanna learn, so listen:

Free your system from closed source. Ghostery for example is not free as in freedom and bloat/10. Replace it by RequestPolicy Continued. Next to it use NoScript and be - as in RequestPolicy - very strict with your filters. To remove ads, some trackers and bloat use uBlock - some ppl here doesn't like it - and HTTPSeverywhere so you won't leak your traffic. For staying anonymous you pointed to TOR and this is fine but remember that, if you are going through TOR in the open Internet, the exit node can read all your traffic - so always use encrypted protocols (HTTPS instead of HTTP, SMTPS instead of STMP, SSH instead of Telnet, ...). Another nice plugin is Self-Destructing Cookies what does what it says: deletes the cookies for the domain of the closed tab after some seconds. Perhaps you should always customize your Useragent to the most common one - something like Firefox on Win 7, just consult EFF, they have this wonderful Panopticlick-thing there.

On the other hand you have to surf with your brain on and don't use the big octopi-services like Google, MS, Twitter and so one.

Ghostery gets a lot of undeserved hate. It's not useless, it does block some trackers. Its usefulness is just very limited, it only blocks trackers from a predefined list. It is also accused of collecting information, but that's not true, unless you enable GhostRank like a retard.

NoScript and RequestPolicy are your best bet. They don't rely on a predefined list of trackers, they block all scripts and requests to third party sites by default, and you turn them on yourself one by one.

It's also tedious as fuck to browse with requestpolicy on. I generally leave it off when I'm doing normie tier browsing.

But anon, that's when you need it the most.

privacy badger changes your settings without

your permission and whitelists google.

If you really want good out of your firefox browser, consider this. don't use firefox. It's just as bad as windows/google. Use a fork, and the addons:noscript, request policy, https everywhere. Don't ever use facebook. Use FOSS Linux OS with no systemd like Devuan because a good browser means nothing if your OS is junk. The best fork with freedom and privacy as its philosophy is GNU Icecat, which actively removes bad "features". Don't use download mirrors you don't trust or ublock, umatrix because they are botnets like disconnect, duckduckgo, ghostery, adblockplus being shilled as an agenda to undermine, destroy, replace actual good addons Specifically: httpseverywhere, requestpolicy, noscript,AdblockEdge. I warned you all way before and now AdblockEdge reads"discontinued" "reason: ublock is better" mint's also been shilled as attempt to entrap exodus newbies running from windows into settling for another false sense of safety. p.s. ixquick.com = best search

beware the shills that will attack this
