Hi /g/.

I'm 17 and in my Senior year of high school. I love programming, and I recently scored an internship at a Software Engineering/Cybersecurity firm. I was one of 3 people out of the 10 that were interviewed that was chosen. I'm pretty pumped about it, and feel like this could lead to opportunities.

But I still want to talk to people that are farther than I am.

If this internship leads to some sort of apprenticeship that I can learn significantly more from, then I don't think I'm going to head straight to college to start working on a degree in Computer Science, mainly for debt and time-saving reasons.

However, if it doesn't, I'll probably head to community college and take classes to get knowledge and experience that I need to get started in the field.

What I want to know is, what did you do to get a career in programming going? What do?

IT, CS, and SE are all generally acceptable. Some roles will be more interested in CS or SE, or both. CS and SE has more theory work, and will involve mathematics. I haven't heard of a job listing wanting an IT degree and not a CS/SE degree. In other words, I would tend to only pick IT instead if the CS/SE programs offered at my university of choice were a bit crap, or I was lazy/needed to juggle full time work at the same time.

Just look at the subjects they offer to give you an idea which you want.

Oh, and in some of the higher-end roles, a maths degree is also accepted.

Contributed to open source used in enterprise environment. Got a call.

get a good feel for the things you encounter during your internship. ASK QUESTIONS. especially to the people doing things that you think you'd be interested in doing. An internship is a huge opportunity to establish relationships with professionals and show them what you are capable of.

Do bear in mind that there is a distinction between 'programming' and 'software engineering'. You might be more inclined toward a particular approach.

Got a degree in IT and some personal projects. I now do QA automation. A lot of coding but not really full on software dev.

What >>3900 said is correct. Sure some places probably turned me down or didn't reply because I didn't have a CS degree, but enough places didn't care. (Plus it's "CS:IT" on paper ;) Although I would like to transition to a developer role and I currently feel very lacking some fundamentals.

Just build off the work experience, regardless of what you do in school.
