Nothing to do with the IRC fags, anon. Many people in the cabals early on were there for ego boosting (Like Rogue, KoP, and their ilk) but most of them ended up getting run out of the group for being idiots, or sperged themselves out over petty disagreements, much as is often the case on twitter.

The shaping the narrative just happens naturally when the same group of people are creating the OPs. We curated ideas from the broader group of GG, and worked to bring them to fruition. That's how OPRebuild was born, the mass email campaigns were due to former political activists like myself offering advice as to the best route to take out our opponent's bottom dollar and force them to adhere to stricter ethics policies.
It's a lot more boring than one would imagine, it mostly consisted of digging through advertisers on sites, picking targets we knew would fold under pressure, choosing the correct ammo, and organizing the broader GG public to email those companies with personalized form letters.
Over time, certain individuals were known as the "go to" guys for specific needs. Organizers, legal guys, writers, curators, diggers, info dumpers, useful idiots, idea men, and morale boosters. It's no different than any political group, and it worked much like a political organization.
As for the "don't say this" many of us did believe that we shouldn't name the LWs by name early on, and that we should avoid adopting "leaders". The anti-leader fags ended up branching off to become the group that eventually created GGRevolt, the organizers ended up growing increasingly tired, and the OPs slowly stopped being created. That's about the time I stepped out of the groups, because they just died.
We accomplished a decent amount of stuff early on, but the combined autism slowly tore us apart. We sort of scattered to the breeze and did our own thing after that. That's why you don't really see near as many OPs nowadays, and when you do, they rarely garner results. There's just not the dedicated core few to offer well thought out ideas to the masses anymore, the cohesion is failing.

I hate to say it, but you're right. We accomplished our early goals, and there's not much else we can do aside from choosing our new targets and organizing new OPs to pressure them into changing.
I was hoping by now that we could set up a lobbying group for gamers, even had a chat with Kern about it. He was heavily considering it, but in the end decided against using LFG for political activism. There's also the issue of finding good lobbyists that know what they're doing. I'm a former lobbyist myself and actually quite good at it, but I wouldn't do it for free. Lobbying work is arduous, tiresome, and soul-sucking. Without a dedicated office, canvassers, activists, and proper funding, it will always be doomed to fail.
In the end I think it just ended up being too lofty a goal for us to pull off, There are quite a few people I'd love to work together with on something of the sort, but the likelihood of us being able to pull it off is rather small.
As for Academia, I'd say that's a decent target, however it's extremely hard to harm the bottom dollar of schools, or get them to change policies when the people who are crafting this narrative and pushing the goals are the student unions themselves. It's pretty much an iron curtain, nothing short of cultural uprise on a grand scale (much larger than GG can accomplish) will garner results.
If you have ideas on how to pull it off though, I'm all ears.

Like a school of predators, the indie clique descended on the scene at this crucial moment in time, and instead of helping to keep things open, they started treating the scene like their own little AAA industry, full of bullshit rhetoric and politics while doing everything that they could to create a dependency amongst younger, impressionable aspiring developers. Most bought it hook line and sinker, completely forgetting what Notch managed to do WITHOUT all that bullshit.
"From us and through us" is the motto of the indie clique, and so many idiots bought it, even though the clique is completely fucking useless more often than not. You do not NEED to network with those people. You do not NEED to network with anyone but the people you are working with ( if you're smart, it's friends or at least people you have face to face contact with from a meetup group.) If you have a quality product and do your own fucking legwork on it, good things will happen.
If you manage to become successful and the clique starts circling you like fucking sharks, tell them thanks but no thanks and just keep on keepin' on. THAT is how you start to attenuate their power and their hold on the scene.

Yeah, I don't agree with him always, some of the recent drama with him made me question him slightly and I think he has done some shitty things before GG and was no saint, but he doesn't deserve that.
