To be perfectly clear, the Gertsmann thing created or at least contributed to the big "reviews are paid for" attitude that was prevalent long before GG. Do you honestly think anybody gave one shit about Franz Ferdinand or Jenkins' Ear? We've had gaming journalism scandals continuously for the past three decades, they all failed to reach critical mass and do anything, whatever its faults, GG made things happen. Gamergate had the momentum and energy to cause cataclysmic drops in ad revenue, get FTC guidelines updated, create Airplay and generally cause massive upheaval in an industry with razor thin profit margins.
