For those who don't know, a patch was released on DotA 2 containing a file named "hl3.txt". Beyond the obvious, someone made the following prediction: What if Half-Life 3 was released this November? With no marketing whatsoever? Imagine:

>suddenly, Half-Life 3 released in November without any warning or marketing or intercession from "video game journalists"

>outsells everything in 2015, including Fallout 4

>also super good

>no pre-orders

>no first day buyers being unpaid beta testers

>no hype based on bullshit

>no day one DLC

>Gaben proves that game journalists are fucking useless to the industry

>makes billions while spending almost nothing on marketing

>other publishers follow suit

>game journalism dies off, Gamergate wins total victory

Gaben could very well be handing us victory on a silver platter.

So, here's to hoping. Picture unrelated because apparently I'm not allowed to post Gaben pics.

I think Valve already helped fuck vidya journalism by adding user reviews to Steam, Steam curators, etc. Didn't they just also delete reviews that were done because indie developers handed out free copies of their games for positive reviews?

f2831f No.285116

>>285115

They did. But doing the HL3 release with no marketing whatsoever would change the industry completely if it manages to sell well.

>Half Life 3

>No hype

>FOR HALF LIFE FUCKING 3!!!

Nigga wich planet have you been living in the past decades?

The Hype for half life 3 has been so constant that it has alrready reached the mithycal meme status on the internet, it will never go away…

Unles the game comes out and it's as good as Duke Nukem Forever

I'm pretty sure I remember Valve saying that they won't ever announce a game again until it's ready to be released in a month or two.

When HL3 gets announced, I imagine it being a surprise countdown page that randomly pops up and lasts a few days, people get excited, countdown ends with a trailer and then sending you to it's Steam page with pre-orders available. Every vidya site will report about it regardless of Valve telling them anything or not.

>Every vidya site will report about it regardless of Valve telling them anything or not.

Regardless, it will serve to proove the Industry the irrelevance of Journos.

A "Fatality" in this situation would be if /v/ actually manages to outmatch the journos in the promotion of the game.

That would send a message loud and clear, anonimous forums will do for free what proffecional Journos charge you for.

And on top of doing the marketing job for free, they would even do a better job at spreading the news far and wide across the web.

Problem would be if the game sucks, if that's the case, anons will tear it to shreds just as fast as they spreaded the hype.

But even still could be a blow to game Journos, a situation like that could inform the normies that devs who relie on paid journos instead of hyped fans for their marketing are not confident enough that the quality of their product will endure the rigorous scrutiny and criticism from the crazed fanboys.

Basically what i'm saying is:

Journos are totally fucked if Gaven decides to do as OP thinks he'll do, no matter what happens after the anouncement

While I doubt Gabe is sitting in his office chair with an evil grin plotting on how he's going to kill off vidya journalism, I do agree that HL3 will most likely play a big role in showing that vidya journalists don't matter.

You're more than a little delusional if you think the most hyped game in history selling well without journalist support would prove that journalism is useless.

Gabe Newell, that piece of shit who invented and continues to push one of the most pervasive DRM systems of the last decade. Gabe Newell, that piece shit who wants people to pay for mods. Gabe Newell, that piece of shit who thinks he has any right to revoke games from people when they've already paid for them.

Gabe Newell will never be on our side, the side of consumers.

Source engine executables have been called hl2.exe since it came out, they recently updated the source engine to version 3. Dota2 was the first game to use version 3.

2+1 = 3, it's never happening.

it should have been source engine 2.1, then 2.2

115518 No.286513

Oops, meant Source Engine version 2. Got myself confused in Goldsrc, Source, Source 2 before coffee had a chance to kick in.

It's still the same point. Source engine games/mods have all used hl2.exe, now it's hl3.exe/txt/whatever.

rare assdog coming through

dac302 No.286999

The only thing Gabe cares about is his bottom line.

Steam is DRM, and the thought that he gives a fuck about pro consumer practices is laughable since he was going to let publishers charge people for mods until the negative publicity threatened his cash cow.

The damage and division it caused to the mod community itself is still there.

These are the same cunts who tried to banish Hatred and only restored it after the public at large freaked out about it like paid mods.

The only good thing Steam has done lately is Curatorship and that's because they want some of those sweet, sweet journalism/opinion bux.

It's a way for them to squeeze more sales from their already captive audience.

And at this point in my opinion there's no way in hell HL3 could ever live up to the hype and expectations, it'd be another Duke Nukem Forever. At best.

Either way, I wouldn't go looking for Gabe to come swooping in to save us.

473850 No.287010

Your optimism is disgusting.

Valve playtesters are retards. Any game that comes out will appeal to the lowest common denominator. If there isn't a co-op mode and purchasable hats I'll honestly be surprised. And that's assuming its released and even a good game.

>Implying this hl3.txt hasn't caused hype based on bullshit that journalists will report on

>Implying games aren't sold on reputation anyway

>Implying journalists won't faun over Alyx for being a mixed race strong female character

>Implying publishers would even go through the effort of copying Valve when they never bothered in the past, except in shitty business practices

d2c1c3 No.287015

>>285118

That idea is hilarious to me.

A videogame journalist who ONLY reports on half-life 3, every day a new review is posted about what could be possible features and what the technology created the day before could do to the game and how it plays.

e52eb8 No.287746

A plan like that would rely on the insane demand there is for half life 3 in particular. Any new games would still need advertising/journalists for anyone to buy them.

A lot of speculation on their stance with gaming journalism, but nothing concrete so far. Everything is really optimistic based only on a text file with a certain name.

>>285115

Perhaps, but at most it's not adversarial to gaming journalism, but rather to their benefit i.e their sales are less so dependent on third party sites.

>>285116

They're a large company however. Have to consider their position in PC gaming as the primary distributor of downloaded games. A smaller game company may still have to rely on journalist sites for publicity in some form.
