I'm an old school gamer(I would say too, but I have doubts it applies to you). Of course the games "journalists" have always been a fraud, though Nintendo Power was probably less so than the modern incarnation. We've known that forever. Its why I don't read reviews and I had never seen Kotaku, Gamasutra, Polygon, or any of that shitfest before GG.

No, the problem is that "our" press became the leftist version of the moral majority. They attack games, developers, and gamers for what they see as transgressions against "progress". I am a southern extremist Christian conservative. I stood against my own for D&D, and Doom, and everything else. I'll be damned if I'm going to sit down for hipsters and wannabe women.

Also, I did expect somewhat better from the indies. Call it naivete, but independent developers were supposed to be the "not sell your soul and be as corrupt as fuck" option.

For not being about games journalism we've sure done a damned good job of getting pretty much every major site to have a published code of ethics. We had a panel at the SPJ. We won the ethics front as much as we will ever be able to in an industry owned and operated press.

We did. A lot. There plenty of threads in oldchan /v/. We were both furious and appalled at that turn of events. Same goes for Doritogate,

Here is the thing, though. GG didn't exist back then because the conditions needed for multiple gaming communities that normally hate each other to interact and coordinate a resistance simply were not met. There was no single spark that unified and drafted us all together.

Why didn't we take to activism before? Because we were apathetic at gaming journalism (since at least /v/ always knew it was shit - though, perhaps, we understated how much shit it was). Because we didn't believe we were sizeable enough to make a difference (and we weren't - /v/ alone would not be able to do this). Because we had no idea how to even begin such a thing.

But that all happened thanks to the attack on gaming in general coupled with the mass censoring of multiple websites, in particular our expulsion from cuckchan that we considered our home for so long.

We did get pissed off Kane & Lynch, Doritos & Mountain Dew, and other anti-consumer shit time and time again. But gamergate was just when it started hitting a fever pitch where we weren't going to take it anymore. And the thing with Zoe Quinn / Chelsea van Valkenburg is that this is when our eyes were opened to the fact that it wasn't just mainstream productions who were having corrupt relations with the press, but even indies. It was the exchange of sex for favorable coverage and various assistances that hit a new low in our perception of gaming journalism at large. It was the peek into indie cliques that were keeping good games from hitting the public market and all the rampant nepotism and collusion (GameJournoPros included) where people were playing a "you scratch my back I scratch yours" and refusing to generally report on other journos being corrupt and otherwise scum because they're afraid of others calling them out for their failings that exposed that today's gamejournalism has become institutionally corrupt.

You're right that it is and has been largely a joke, but that doesn't invalidate a desire to clean up the mess NOW.

This whole thing would have been over in two weeks if Kotaku had fired Nathan Grayson for his obvious conflicts of interest.

The reason it blew up is because Kotaku, Gamasutra, Ars Technica, and a bunch of other outlets all dropped "GAMERS ARE DEAD" articles within hours of each other, circling the wagons and claiming they never did anything wrong and that gamers were terrible people for even suggesting it.

So GG started in protest of the games media which was now openly anti-gamer, and the media started its narrative of claiming they never did anything wrong and this is all just about misogyny.
