he's not wrong. "Our" attempts to build infrastructure like deepfreeze and the GG wiki and BasedGamer or the Rebuild Initiative haven't been as successful as we have been at being a reactive shitstorm.
GG as Shitstorm:
-got world media attention
-made major sites pay lip service to our disclosure demands
-DisNod hurt Gawker's wallet some
-gave SJWs a boogeyman that functions as a Rorschach test
-giving trolls some credit: got Koretzky to notice us
-created tons of dank memes
-SVU episode
-Made LWs rich
-Internet Civil War
GG as debate infrastucture:
-censored on most platforms
-two groups talk past each other because of ideological differences "media ethics" vs. "cyberharassment (of women)"
-mob mentality makes asses of group(s)
-mob identity used to silence legitimate voices in group because of parasitic outliers.
GG is a case where having "too much information", aka, demonstrating that you actually know what is going on, immediately kafkatraps you as a misogynist harasser.
Check this out. I set out to prove to a random person on my social media account that the troll element in GG was largely independent using the following as evidence:
-The Newsweek stats, properly interpreted
-The WAM! stats
-Screencaps from Teridax claiming credit for trolling, and Teridax doing the work
-Screencaps from Ayyshits
-Screencaps from the Waggoner crew
-links to Sam Hyde of MDE and the coverage of the reporter shooting
-links to that guy who claimed he was gonna race L Wu and kept mentioning guns and shit
-screencaps of GGHP tracking down Celebrinando Guy accounts
-screencaps of Leigh Alexander and Zoe Quinn thanking people in GG for trying to curb harassment
and you know what I proved to that random person?
I proved that I am a misogynist harasser using ethics in gaming journalism as a smokescreen to attack women because I think they're ruining video games or something.
Fucking really. People don't want reality, they want a soundbyte, and anyone who looks deeply into a political issue gets burned one way or another. It's a flaw built into human nature. Clickbait and the MSM campaign exploited our low attention span and tribalist nature.
So what is the Shitstorm to End All Internet Shitstorms good for, in the final analysis?
Creating a community of know-it-all pariahs who can influence people the increasingly-less-inclusive mainstream continues to shun. Core GG is a fringe group, but many not in GG sympathize with us in part because they share our 'enemies'.
What else was #NotYourShield about?
We're a reactionary group. That's okay. Being proactive is also good, but 'reactionary group' is only a dirty word in the context constructed by illiberal liberals. There are real things in this event worth reacting to. Not all of them, but some of them, definitely.
