6625f1 No.300692

TIME Magazine has released their 2015 Game of the Year list on their website. Now, I have no problem with their taste in video games, no matter how bad it is. With that said, their pick for the #1 game this year is highly questionable.

http://time.com/4106659/top-10-video-games/

>1. Prune

>As its name suggests, Prune is a game about removing things to nurture other things.

>But it’s also about basking in a minimalist garden of forking paths as you work out the spatial logistics of coaxing a tree to blossom.

>It’s both an arboricultural exercise and a meditation–on light, darkness, color, sound and perhaps most of all, the things we’re forced to leave behind.

Basically, it's an iOS game that plays a bit like Fruit Ninja. I've never heard of it. No one seems to have heard of it. It holds less than 5,000 ratings on the App Store and Google Play combined. The way I see it, there are two possibilities here:

1: This (anonymous?) author really, REALLY likes mediocre iOS games.

2: The author is friends with the developers of Prune, and is using TIME to virally market the game.

What does /gamergatehq/ think? Is this worth looking into?

cfe65c No.300693

I'd say look into it.

6625f1 No.300696

>>300693

The first step would be figuring out who wrote it.

I don't know if the author is anonymous, or if TIME's shitty website is just broken. For example, this page will show the author's name if JavaScript is disabled. With JS on, the author vanishes once the page has loaded. I've tried it in Firefox, Chrome and Edge, and they all behave the same way.

http://time.com/5461/this-poodle-will-stop-at-nothing-to-protect-his-baby-sister-from-an-evil-blow-dryer/?iid=obinsite

If it's not a secret, we could send TIME an e-mail and just ask who wrote it.

Not corruption related, but here's what they had to say about the #2 entry. It's been fixed now.

>Exclusively on PS4! :^)

If it is viral marketing, it seems to be working.

> iOS people been suggesting Prune to me, guess i gotta give that a try

> Surprisingly solid list. Interested in Prune now.

> Prune seems interesting.

> Interested in Prune for sure.

> thanks to this list i am checking out prune

Keep in mind that this isn't a F2P title. People will have to spend $4 on it to try it out.

Oh, I've figured it out. The author is visible on http://time.com/topic/top-10-of-2015/ .

The list was written by Matt Peckham.

>Matt Peckham is TIME's video games critic.

>He has an M.A. in Creative Writing from Creighton University and lives in Iowa.

His Twitter account is @mattpeckham. The question now is if he has any connections to the developer of Prune, Joel McDonald (@mcdjoel). I can't find any connections on Twitter, so perhaps the guy is just an innocent hipster.

36cd80 No.300742

>>300703

Don't look for direct connections. The smart ones would take the extra effort not to expose links.

Instead, check their direct networks, and find connections from there.

But Tomb Raider won't be on PS4 until next year. Or is that what they fixed?

I commend your vigilance and connective reasoning, OP. My instincts tell me this is likely a non-ethical breach, and just an instance of lucky timing for the developer to have a Time writer pick it up so quickly. It reminds me strongly of Zen Bound 2, and it's likely a legit indie title not connected to the clique. Still looking into it too, key names Joel McDonald& Kyle Preston.

I think TIME is just written by normie fugs who think phone games and Square Enix console titles are the same thing.

I agree OP,it sure is weird to put some some unknown mobile game at the top,but if you can't find any connection, not much we can do.

So I poked around and made this collage. They don't seem to be idiots on twitter, which is a good sign. Liking TaleOfTales threw up a red flag to me, as did TrainJam(famously featured on the shitty GameLoading: Rise of the Indies documentary on Steam that ZQ was on) but they seem like genuine independent game makers that are equal parts media-savvy and lucky. I give them a preliminary pass, but feedback on my image or new info is welcome & appreciated.

Following/follower lists are short, don't see any terrible connections. Worst are following Phil Fish, Davey Wreden(The Stanley Parable, ZQ buddy) & Naomi Clark(a connector to Leigh Alexander), and an account that handles invites to the unofficial GDC party list.

My mother acutally showed me this game once on her ipad.

It was a neat little game so it's probably popular on the app store and with casual gamers.

>a meditation on […] the things we're forced to leave behind

I know that feel. I was recently playing through Fallout 3 and there were many times when I had to leave loot behind because I was over my weight limit. New Vegas also had that thing in Dead Money where you get a lot of gold but will die if you try to haul it with you. But then you realize that if you dismember a corpse, put the gold on the corpse and then physically carry one of its limbs to the exit, you can get all the gold. Really makes you think about life and stuff.

5eb22b No.300875

What if there's no conspiracy for this one and this is just the new normal?

29e876 No.300928

>>300866

I never thought to do that. I mean, I knew you could loot individual limbs and I knew you could pick up and move things but I never put 2 and 2 together. Now I feel really dumb.

9f26f8 No.301123

>>300875

That's my conclusion. TIME wasn't their first publication to earn coverage from, and they don't look suspicious online. TIME is just shit for making it a "Top Ten" article, instead of "Ten great games you should play this year," because Prune sure as fuck shouldn't outrank Tomb Raider.

5eb22b No.301132

>>301123

Do you think you should have to register with a central authority to use the phrase "Top Ten"?

9f26f8 No.301135

>>301132

I think TIME & their writers have demonstrated that they aren't an authority to be making Top Ten lists for video games.

917dc2 No.301161

>>301132

Not him but… No, but I think a Top 10 list does require you to have an eye for quality, a frame of reference, and discerning taste. If you throw up shit you like at random, then you're clearly not doing a good job of it. We'll just chalk it up to TIME's continuing downhill slide where they letting their editing, standards, and relevance drop off for that wider mass-market appeal here, but it was a shoddy piece of writing.

Heinlein's razor and all that: "You have attributed to malice conditions that naturally arise from stupidity."

d920fd No.301173

Time Magazine does video games now? lol I'm sure this will be a highly insightful perspective.

5eb22b No.301180

>>301161

>eye for quality, a frame of reference, and discerning taste

These are all subjective terms. Without some sort of Ministry of Culture -style central authority that must be consulted before using a phrase like "Top Ten" in print I don't know what you expect.

To be honest, I couldn't say one way or another whether Prune is the best game of 2015 for people who regularly read TIME Magazine.

9f26f8 No.304358

>>301180

>I don't know what you expect.

I expect a AAA Square-Enix game to outrank a 1-man iPhone game, you contrarian dolt. For a world-circulated publication in print and digitally, phone games should not outrank studio productions; they shouldn't even be on the same top ten list.

bf2907 No.304465

>>300692

>"friends" with the shitty game's devs

>implying he's not a paid shill

Reminder that all bloggers are paid for shit so they look for "alternative" sources of income

Reminder that ALL bloggers have patreon which allows anyone to pay them for coverage

923f8e No.304476

>>304358

Regardless of anything else in this thread, the fact that you can get so personally offended by a top ten list makes me think that your life must be incredibly sad. Are you 12 years old, or just a virgin neet?
