The Gamergate Wiki is again open for editing

www.gamergatewiki.com

I had to nuke it once more because it was invaded by spambots. My naïve self thought e-mail confirmation was enough to keep them away.

Welcome back gamergatewiki-senpai

be1805 No.318917

Everyone remember you can check the archives to see if pages have more recent versions (I think the archives are a few months more recent than the database OP used).

https://archive.is/http://wiki.gamergate.me/*

http://web.archive.org/web/20150819140329/https://wiki.gamergate.me/index.php/Special:AllPages

Of course it's been many months since it could be edited so it also needs a lot of manual updates regardless.

FUCK YES

Thank you for setting this up for us, host-kun.

8fc106 No.318962

Is there some kind of timer set in place for edits? I'm trying to fix categories (which involve many small, quick changes) and pages will refuse to be edited after I've already updated one.

d921f3 No.318965

>>318962

Check the view history tab on the pages you're changing to see if your edits are there. I think only certain types of accounts can do real time edits. Others have to be approved by admin level accounts.

8fc106 No.318966

>>318965

Contributions and recent changes pages don't show any updates. I don't think the changes are going through at all. When I click to save or view preview, the edit page simply reloads with all changes gone (luckily I'm not retarded and I make backups of my changes before editing).

It's odd because some edits go through with no issues and the page updates right away. I'm guessing there's either a timer to prevent spam or the fact that I reclaimed an old account is causing some issues.

On that note: Host-kun, people can re-register with account names from the previous wiki. As far as I can tell, it causes no security issues as passwords and account info is not revealed, but it connects the old Talk: pages and [likely] User: pages (though clicking on those leads to a missing page error). The Talk: and User: pages are all public so it's not like it's some kind of a security exploit, but it might cause some issues and butthurt down the line if people start claiming user names that weren't theirs.

e87d96 No.318979

Oh shit, sorry I didn't drop by sooner.

That's an odd problem. I didn't setup any timer for that, and apparently it's not a default thing either. I suppose it might be related to reclaiming an old account, yeah. The old accounts have edits to their names yet aren't registered, it might be fucking with the code. Try a fresh new name.

>On that note: Host-kun, people can re-register with account names from the previous wiki.

The old user database is gone for good, courtesy of our good friend Vince, and it's not possible to verify whether someone owned a given old username, so it's all up for grabs. Tho given your issue, it might not be a good idea.

8fc106 No.318984

>>318979

Made new account and the same issues are present, though not as bad. If I'm able to identify any patterns with the articles that refuse to be updated, I'll post them here.

e87d96 No.318988

>>318984

Sometimes the wiki takes several seconds to actually update after your commit the changes, so if you check it right away, there will be no changes. I take it you tried F5ing after 5 or so seconds?

8fc106 No.318995

>>318988

Reloading the page makes no change. About 90% of my edits will go through with no delay, but a few articles seemingly won't accept edits. Like I mentioned in my earlier post,

>When I click to save or view preview, the edit page simply reloads with all changes gone

I've been keeping track of pages that won't update, but so far there's been no obvious trend between them. I'll revisit them later and see if they can be edited then.

Also, do you or anyone else know why our People categories are being organized under the } symbol, and how to fix it?

http://thisisvideogames.com/gamergatewiki/index.php?title=Category:People

(I have no clue how Anne Rice managed to escape this.)

Thanks for standing by and helping out.

e87d96 No.318999

>>318990

I confess I never heard of #dossier, sorry. This return of the wiki just sorta happened in /v/'s GG general a few weeks ago.

So you're the guys who made the dossier? I just googled it and found a document with the same version as the one in the wiki. Is there a newer one?

Thanks for the work you put into it, by the way.

>>318995

Don't mention it. When this thread dies, feel free to fire an e-mail when needed. You might also find me in /v/'s GG general.

I just checked the { thing, and it's caused by the presence of a Person Infobox anywhere in the page. Anne Rice doesn't have one.

It's probably just a matter of editing that box's template. I'll look into it and search Mediawiki documentation about the edit page bug tomorrow, it's awfully late here.

e87d96 No.319097

Well, me and my big mouth. Turns out there actually is a default setting to prevent spam of various functions. Edits are limited to 8 per minute. I've upped it to 30 a minute for now, while there's cleaning to be done that requires lots of small changes, like you said.

But the problem of some pages being uneditable remains. I just found one such page in the sysop area, it's the first and only one I found. I might have to ask my host to work some voodoo.

I managed to find a simple way to fix pages with the category bug. Simply edit the page. Just adding a comma or something is enough. After the page is saved, the category will be corrected.

And in the course of investigating the previous bug I noticed another one: people in completely wrong categories. Eron Gjoni was listed as a video game journalist (but not as journalist) despite the article being tagged as people. Fortunately, this bug is solved the same way as the previous one. Just editing the page will put it back in the category(ies) it belongs.

I think these sorts of bugs must spring up when importing databases and such.

I can't make an account because of the captcha. Turn Javascript on, it disappears. Weird.

Also, it may not be a good idea to give our IPs to Google. Could you use another captcha service, perhaps one that can be run locally on the same server?

Do you have a second browser installed to try to register on? If need be, you can just mail me your desired username and password.

There are several captchas to choose from, including making my own questions for captchas. I picked ReCaptcha because it's very efficient against bots and it's familiar.

Here are all possibilities: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ConfirmEdit

Jokes about botnet aside, is Google a serious privacy risk already?

Yeah, a lot of work needs to be done. I hardly even know where to start. If you or anyone else has some recommendations on what we should focus on first, feel free to list them here.

8fc106 No.319204

What's the preference regarding references? Should we use the {{cite}} tags or the <ref> tags? Because holy hell citations are a bitch to format.

I went ahead and added the missing months to the Timeline navigation bar and got the invididual pages set up with a table of contents, category, etc. It's all bare bones but ready for editing.

227636 No.319240

>>319195

Should we start by trying to update the timeline.

e5eb37 No.319249

Just too a stab at it i hope i didn't make too much of a mess.

Can the happening list be used for editing the timelines as well?

51511d No.319251

>>319204

Either tag is fine, {{reflist}} recognizes both.

>>319249

I don't get what you mean, sorry.

51511d No.319260

>>318995

Well, my attempts at fixinf the damn edit bug failed. I'll file a ticket with Mediwiki's support, but I need a few pages with the bug. The only one I have is a sysop-only page.

8fc106 No.319267

>>319240

Definitely, especially now since Current Happenings has fallen behind. Current Happenings and KiA would be good tools to use to fill in the missing months. If anyone has any other sources for GG events, please post them ITT.

>>319251

Sorry, should have specified, which formatting should be used over the other? {{cite}} has all of the details but is a bitch to do and makes the edit page a giant mess. <ref> is quicker and easier, but it doesn't have as many details.

>>319260

Alex Hern, Ben Kuchera, Ian Miles Cheong, Jace Connors, Sam Biddle, Trolls, Support List, and APGNation won't allow edits.

Either one is fine. {{cite}} is for when you want an academic-like format. We use mostly URLs, so <ref> should be enough.

The timeline is coming together nicely

Some things to consider/discuss:

>GGHQ notification

MODS MODS MODS

The "We have a new #GamerGate Wiki" notice is no longer a prototype and the URL now redirects. plz update.

>Wiki should be put back on /v/ thread pastebin

If anyone can add the GGwiki to the thread pastebin, that'd be great. If nothing else, we should remind bakers to include the Wiki on future threads. I think we should add our Timeline as a second link under Current Happenings, too.

>Project Template & Operations

Can anyone can figure out how to get the Template:Projects to work? http://thisisvideogames.com/gamergatewiki/index.php?title=Projects:Hub

It might be a bug, or I might be retarded. I added redirect links to the Projects page so there's at least something there. There are also some Operations on the wiki that might be outdated or not have enough support to be considered Operations anymore. Maybe we can create a thread to discuss Operations and then edit the wiki accordingly.

how do the reference thingy work again?

8c1900 No.320092

Okay, about that damnable bug of the uneditable pages, it seems that a host security feature is to blame. It seems to be t-t-t-t-triggered by certain specific strings of characters, there's one page which could be fixed simply by removing a quotation mark. I'll contact my host's support, hopefully I won't have to disable the security thing and leave my ass open for more Vince faggotry.

Other than that, I fixed a few bits and bobs around. If anyone sees unparsed tags like for example {{#ev … }} please do mail me.

>>320053

I'm not familiar with these templates, but it doesn't seem bugged to me. Isn't it just a matter of starting the page in the Projects namespace?

>>320088

you can use <ref></ref> or {{cite|site=|url=|title=|aurl=}}, both work fine.

8fc106 No.320101

>>320092

I've just begun to tinker with the templates to try to get them to work, but I've already noticed that one of the extensions is outdated and needs a replacement. <createbox> is no longer supported and has been updated to <inputbox>. According to MediaWiki, InputBox should've been bundled on our version, but I don't see it included on the version page. Here's a link:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:InputBox

I'm not sure if you want to keep the extension, but I thought I'd tell you because the Projects:Hub used [createbox] at one point and now it's broken.

8fc106 No.320104

More thoughts/questions. Sage for double-posting:

1) On the front page:

>This is a free and open encyclopedia operated by GamerGate.me intended to document information concerning GamerGate, including its importance, findings, and goals. It can be edited by anybody!

Gamergate.me is ded/compromised and the wiki no longer under its control so we should probably fix this. If not getting rid of the gg.me mention entirely, something like

>previously operated by GamerGate.me, currently operated by [This is Video Games?]

without directly linking to it.

2) What's the etiquette regarding removing old/pointless page discussion posts? There are some discussion points on various pages that are outdated or now irrelevant, but I'm not sure if it's considered taboo to delete them.

96c0cc No.320149

File: 1458865246184.mp4 (45.69 KB, 200x150, 4:3, B1XwQOVCUAEnQtA.mp4)

Hoo-fucking-ray, the edit bug is finally fixed. All pages should be normal now.

>>320101

><createbox> is no longer supported and has been updated to <inputbox>

>Projects:Hub used [createbox] at one point and now it's broken.

I'll look into it.

>I'm not sure if you want to keep the extension

Well getting rid of it would break the instances currently being used. If only I could run a search-and-replace, this would be easily fixed. I think there's an extension for that, I'll try it.

>>320104

>Gamergate.me

Fug, I replaced links to it all over the place, and miss the one right in the fucking intro.

>etiquette

Dunno either, I'm new to this wiki thing. As far as host resources go, there's no issue.

96c0cc No.320160

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF now I just tried editing an interface thing and got the damn bug again.

>>320149

>there's no issue.

No issue with keeping the full text, I mean.

96c0cc No.320162

Alright, I replaced CreateBox with InputBox. Turns out the only CreateBox instance is that one in the Projects:Hub page. It asked for a type, and I assume "create page" would be best.

8fc106 No.320165

I went ahead and removed some of the discussions for the Main Page as I figured there's no harm in getting rid of things that have been made irrelevant due to fixes or the server switch. My reasoning is to clean up the Talk:Pages so new topics won't get buried in old stuff that no longer matters.

I've been able to successfully edit some of the pages that were giving me edit issues earlier. Everything looks good, but I'll let you know if I find any pages that stubbornly refuse to be edited.
