So what will the rules be here?
Will the old /g/wiki be linked here?

We decide on rules together. Start by discussing them here.

Rules? Simple: No CP or no spam. Let the freedom of opinions flow.

Well, since we have a /tech/ board already, we could use this board for stuff like programming and whatnot. Have it like a /prog/ board, as we were talking about in >>/14/.
No.81
Shills need to be told to go to /shill/ on the first offense. Second offense should be a permban, no questions asked.
Threads like "recommend this to me" and "what's the best for" should be sent to /tech/. That's the soft tech board.
Just my two cents.
No.86
I enabled poster IDs and a max. of 3 images per post. Spamming retarded shit and/or retarded pictures will result in a ban.

well now, where do i start?
no porn
no disgusting content
all threads should be /gentoo/ related. meaning that we should focus more on Linux and other FOSS, to discern ourselves from /tech/
which brings me to the following:
no battlestations thread
that should go to /tech/
no consumer gadget circlejerking
that also should go to /tech/ or wherever
in order to build an identity of its own, this board should live up to its name, and be about FOSS, programming, compilers and such
we should make a sticky with programming resources, linux resources, also BSD and other derivatives
/gentoo/ should not be about tech in general in my opinion, but about software tech in general
No.103
>>97This. Mostly this.
Old /g/ was a big general consumer tech shitfight and while it was fun to get lost in every now and again, it offered little in the way of sustenance, if you get what I am saying. It's just hopping around the threads, getting little bits of instant gratification. You come away from the threads having learned nothing and gained nothing. All the while, your copy of SICP sits unread, your dreams of programming–learning anything new, really–go unrealized. Maybe I'm projecting a little but I can't be the only one who feels betrayed by himself and that constant flow of ineffectual, attention-span destroying garbage. Perhaps /gentoo/ can be opposite that; a board such that l33t haxx0rz can actually talk and new users can see and be inspired by. That's a bit idealistic, but it would be a place to go to keep sharp and remember what it is you want yourself to be doing.
I wouldn't mind having a board for higher-level discussions of software (maybe hardware). I immediately think of 4chan /sci/ which, apart from things like 300k starting, genetics threads, and other shitposting, had a wide base of more-or-less knowledgeable users, themselves being students of mathematics and physics. On 4chan/g/, nobody knows a Goddamned thing. As I elaborated earlier, I didn't learn anything on /g/ but I did come away from /sci/ having been driven to read a handful of undergrad math books.
The downside is that discussions are may be small and/or slow because there are less people knowledgeable about Linux/software internals/theoretical computer science than there are people who can shit up a consumer tech image board, but perhaps /gentoo/ can change that and if not, that's the price we pay for higher standards I suppose.
Another thing is that well-established undergrad textbook topics don't much to be elaborated upon by a bunch of amateurs, so I'm not clear on what will be discussed in a higher-level tech board.
One thing is that we could have amateur (by which I mean nonprofessional endeavor and not skiddie-tier) hacks, patches, and projects, if not on this board then another board. /diy/ was always nice to browse in this regard but nobody does software over there (which isn't in the scope of what /diy/ does and it was really cool to see people posting their interesting, actually good software projects on /g/.
That's another thing; creative endeavors are always cooler to see than the same Goddamned desktop, GPU, Windows, etc. threads every day.
maybe this is spreading the board too thin but just my two cents
No.107
>>103thanks for wording it like that
i really hated /g/ for posting endless threads about apple products, mp3 players stuff, consumer garbage in general
anyone remember the Nvidia Fermi debacle and how AMD was fucking them over for nearly half a year?
of course you do, we had some of the best laughs during that time, but the board sucked. every thread was about wood screws, shitty performance, boiling water temperatures and even fucking mollusc tears. do fucking molluscs even have tears what the fuck?!
keep that shit to /tech/ so we can actually do some productive shit like programming, compiling, learning computing on the fundamental level
No.112
>>107and just to add, in my opinion it would be much better to have a slow board where people can just be /gentoo/ than to have
1. Linux hate thread
https://8chan.co/tech/res/157.html2.GPU benchmark thread
https://8chan.co/tech/res/175.htmljesus christ /tech/ we all have internet and can google graphs
3.Fucking desktop thread, aka stare at my wallpaper
https://8chan.co/tech/res/10.htmlI really don't want this board to be another /g/. I think it's awesome to just be /gentoo/
No.114
>>103I love the your idea. It's possible to build a vibrant community with just a few people. However, they have to be active.
You probably know the 'lurker-pyramid'. For every person, creating a thread, there are 10 persons commenting and 100 persons viewing it.
My question is what is a good strategy to populate the board? I think it's great if you find similarities between the interest of people. E.g. if some people want to learn C a bit more in depth there could be a K&R thread.
So, maybe a 'what interests you?' thread would be a good idea. What do you think?

we have wordfilter options though.
sage is activated already, forced anon can be enforced if you guys want.

I think we should link to the installgentoo wiki and other /g/ related sites. They really helped me and I think that by linking to them we would be able to minimize the "What language is good for a noob?", "What linux distro should I use?" "Are there good programming books out there?" questions.

i think we shouldn't be too strict on rules first, since this board is move slowly, we don't want to go full nazi on users and scare them away from 8chan in general.
See a thread in a wrong board, kindly sage and point them to the right direction, if he/she won't budge and continue spamming then mod can delete his thread, ban should be use for extreme case.
also i posted this in other thread, i think sticky should mention /prog/ /gentoo/ /tech/ as sister board, so users can decide on which board to post on.
clear and simple rules like:
>desktop, battlestation, homescreen, thinkpad, apple, EDC, unboxing, build, hardware recommendation and consumer tech threads
should be in /tech/, while something like:
>tox, gtorrent
should be in /gentoo/
>tl;dr
/tech/ should be a filter to /gentoo/ as all consumer distraction shill threads go there.
No.383
Unless you properly distinguish yourself from that consumer /g/arbage shit, I'll never use this shithole either. Fuck yall. Even if I don't like forums, it would be a much better alternative than these constant pure unadulterated faggotry that's been going on.
Get rid of the wiki. We don't need theirs. This board should have its own competency, otherwise just drop it cause it's not anything worthwhile.

"4chan's social contract is faulty, as are its enforcers, so we naturally see crummy results. The mere size of the thing doesn't help. I'm of the opinion that smaller communities with an explicit aim or purpose can have the best social contract assigned to its cause, and enable the most fruitful gain. We can see this being the case with many smaller companies and in many apartment complexes or shared households, and looking at history, we can see that different people have different needs. "
Quoting this from /philosophy/. It's put eloquently my sentiments towards this whole thing.

>PC Building Guide>Laptop buying guide>Headphones and Audio equipment>Mechanical keyboards and Mice>Routers and firmware guides>Portables>Vape / E-cig guides We could make our own /gentoo/ guide. Simple html pages are easily hosted on github, dropbox, etc. without any hassle. What do you guys think?
No.388
The "I didn't see a X thread in the catalog, so I'll start one!" threads are shit.
>PLEASE INTERACT WITH ME ON INTERNETS ONIICHAN!
fuck off back to 4chan if you want highly repetitive dullposting.
No.401
>>388I have no idea how the most popular threads on /g/ are homescreen, desktop, battlestations, etc. From the outside, it feels like it's just a circlejerk about things no one should give a fuck about.
