Hey /gentoo/

I have a feeling I'm being trolled here. Is it even possible to have software repositories and package managers on a proprietary platform such as Windows?

Your thoughts?

Repositories: should be doable, I just have my doubts with the chain-of-certificates/paperwork method of signing that MSFT tends to employ

Package managers: Windows has one and its package format is mind-boggingly awful. You know if you've ever tried to decode one with Orca.

It's generally a good idea to have a packages or ports system, but I think that ultimately the community is too fragmented and MSFT too distrusted as a convicted monopolist to pull it off.

this just came to my mind

when i tried the app store in win8 it was already filled with garbage, junk and malware left and right

there were like a dozen programs with VLC icon

took me 5 minutes to NOPE

i don't think they will do any better if they tried with their "software repos" and "package manager"

it's not impossible. I used to use Ninite to mass-install crap without having to click "next" a hundred times and uncheck toolbars and shit.

tried npackd at about the same time, selection of packages wasn't great though

a quick google search turns up Chocolatey which I've never used but looks better

it would be nice for Windows to have a decent package manager, but I'll be surprised if it ever has anything as good as apt-get/others. probably the best all we can hope for is something like the Apple Store.

>like the Apple Store

I too think this might be the direction where they're going, and that's probably the sole reason and fear that made Valve to start pushing for the gaming on Linux.

APT isn't a package manager, it's a package handling utility
