Open Sores rage thread!

What needs to be fixed and how can it be accomplished?

A really annoying thing is all these small paper cuts that open source software has.

I hate seeing terminal spam when Plymouth is being used.
It should not show any terminal spam when Plymouth is enabled.

It should be easy to fix but I don't know where to start. Canonical should fix this on Ubuntu or something.

FreeBSD should stop releasing graphics drivers when you can't even switch tty with them yet, this is a major flaw.

OpenBSD should be able to detect my battery but keep on the good work OpenBSD.

OpenBSD should be able to boot

I actually had trouble with booting OpenBSD on my netbook where it won't recognize the battery.

I disabled mpbios at boot and it worked. It's only supposed to be a problem inside a virtual machine but since my netbook is a single core it was a problem on it too.

Localization in FreeBSD is also too annoying to modify, I am currently install PC-BSD 10.1 so I can get working KMS radeon drivers with the ability to switch TTY and easy localization changing.

It might have stopped his heart or fucked a lung. Definitely busted his sternum. That was a beanbag round point blank to the chest. Just go ask /k/.

FreeBSD 10.1 ships with a new virtual terminal driver that fixes this (plus adds other useful stuff like proper Unicode support); you do have to enable it manually though.

>What needs to be fixed
We need a free-as-in-freedom browser that isn't complete shit.

>and how can it be accomplished?

I don't think that's possible; modern web standards are just too big and complex (and that's without even getting into all this add-on bullshit)

So either:
>Big, slow, and/or unstable
or
>Small, fast, and half the webpages you visit don't work properly

I plan on rewritting my own browser and engine in c. and rewritting a wget alternative I want it to be similar to mothra.

>I plan on rewritting my own browser and engine in c.
>C

I should warn you, writing a modern browser in C will probably drive you to suicide. You might consider using a high-level language and then writing only the critical bits in C.

Either way, good luck.

As I'm told. I still want to do it regardless. And I'm a unix fag so I like c preferred.

Anon said "and engine".

WebKit is huge:

Of course, that's not to say it can't be done; I'm just saying that this is no small task.

There's the engine of Dillo and netsurf you could contribute to instead, and there's Servo too.

I don't like any of those browser/engine especially not the servo engine.

So, how did it go?
