 No.403

So, today I am switching from Ubuntu to OpenSuse after using Ubuntu exclusively for about three months. Pic related is my long-term goal. Any input?

 No.404

I think that Suse is a pretty good stepping stone, but you should really try out Debian. You can still use what you know from Ubuntu (apt, dpkg), except it's a much more versatile system. It can be bloated to hell or really minimal, stable as can be or on a relatively recent rolling release. However, my problem is that now I've become a baby duck too scared to try out new distros for fear that they would be a waste of time. Because of this, try out Suse before Debian.

You just described exactly why I'm going from Ubuntu to OpenSuse to Fedora to Manjaro. Each step is a successive rung as far as scale is concerned, but not a derivative of the last. Thanks for the input.

if you have a spare computer to fiddle with, you could go straight for gentoo and learn how it works as you try to install it

once you succeed you keep it for a couple of years to get to know it inside and out

and just to add

you don't really need to learn any other source based distro, like Lunar or Crux. i suppose they're cool, never used them, but once you get a hold of gentoo's use flag system, you'd be rocking hard with no need to go LFS

also, skip deepin because the updates suck from chinese servers. that's why i call it derpin

I've toyed with Gentoo in a VM. Haven't really touched it once I got to startx, though.

 No.411

Manjaro is so simple, people might as well start from there. Then go straight to Arch. Fuck that Fedora/Debian nonsense.

 No.413

U'r far too pessimistic, you could go to gentoo in less than a year.year 2 can be LFS.

you should definitely try slackware (full install, or if you'll have enough knowledge, select the packages you want) and debian
oh, and you might as well skip fedora, it sucks

>>411
>debian nonsense
explain, i bet you never tried it

 No.417

>>415
Oh, I have. It has its uses, but for general computing Arch will give you everything you need without having to undo and remove shit you don't like.

 No.419

>>417
no, if you do a netinst or use debootstrap you don't have to "remove shit"; a debian minimal install behave basically the same as arch, except for apt-get that's a huge pile of shit

Debian (netinstall) -> Slackware -> Gentoo

Discard Arch, it's shit.

 No.429

Well, this thread really helped…

debian is so much shit that decade long developers will fork it pretty soon

 No.541

Update: after a failed suse install, I skipped straight to manjaro and am glad I did. It's fucking amazing and has taught me so much. Thanks for all the input everyone.

Wait for devuan then do Devuan > slackware > Gentoo or better yet try openbsd instead and you will probably learn more about modern unix then you will if you use GNU/Linux

 No.543

>>542
Either that, or figure out how to do a systemd-free Debian, then Slackware > Gentoo. Another second choice would be Void, depends if you're a minimuhlist.

I would love to get into the *bsds

I really like the characteristics of DragonFly BSD too. Would you say it's ready for mainstream use yet?

Definitely got a kek out of me

Also, Linux Mint should be in that chart instead of OpenSUSE imo.

Great OS, shit support for users or businesses. Shit, take Ubuntu as an example - take apart the useless shit Canonical does and the community, and that's pretty much Debian. The difference is one sells and solves users problems, the other doesn't.

Devuan isn't dead yet? Thank god.
