What is a boycott?

A boycott is where a group of people, usually consumers, decide to not use a service or buy a product. They do so as a form of protest against some perceived injustice.

Why boycott?

A boycott can be viewed as an act of economic violence, maybe as revenge or to punish some group of people. It can also be viewed, in a different way, as a very positive and constructive process, where consumers gain agency and by seeking out alternative producers and services, consumer-friendly business can thrive. This second reason is why Gamergate should boycott, for the betterment of the gaming industry. Please keep that in mind. This is a positive action.

How does this board work?

The board name is /ggboycotts/, that means this board will host discussion of any and all types of Gamergate related boycotts. If you want to make a case for the boycott of a group or company or individual, make your case and your fellow Gamergaters may choose to follow you. There is no coercion involved, everybody is free to make up their own mind, and act how their wish to act. This is not a union of any kind.

The board owner, me, will have the only sticky list of boycotts. I will look at arguments made by others and alter the sticky as I think necessary. If you don't like it, feel free to put your point forward or make another board (which is what necessitates this board since /gamergatehq/ does not allow boycott discussion).

How do I make a case?

Threads that present the case like, "I hates da Micro$oft, letz boicot em," will be locked. Please try to include the following information presented as clearly as possible…

Reason

Evidence

Action

Alternatives

Action should be simple, clearly defined, and reasonable. You can't expect people to uninstall Steam, for example, but you could make a case for boycotting a Steam sale, for example.

Alternatives should be good alternatives readily available on the market that will at least mitigate some of the inconvenience of the boycott for the consumer, and at best open people's eyes to great products and companies they may not have heard about before. This last part is very important in making boycotts viable and an enjoyable and positive experience.
