If free software and free software development ignores ethical appeals, then it is not really free software development. If your kernel or software is designed to exclude people you don't like or include restrictive components, then it is proprietary software that does not respect the users.

The kernel Linux includes pieces of software that are distributed only in binary form (firmware, for example), which violates the spirit of free software. Having some parts of the kernel which you are not allowed to modify contaminates people and makes them accept more non-free software, which in turn affects their stances on changing/sharing software and other positive values which are essential in society.
