Geothermal, hydro, wind and biofuels are some of the most viable options. Discuss.

23bdf9 No.1463

>>1459

well I doubt a crew of a couple people could have the engineering expertise to o such a dangerous thing such as digging so deep that geothermal power becomes an option, though I'm sure some of the locals could help.

Trees take a while to grow, like 20 years to become as tall as a man so that would be arduous to say the least, as for cars we could just use reindeer sleds in the winter (many of the locals do it) and if we could get our own Oil drilling then we could definitively get enough money that buying a little gas from a nearby Village wouldn't be to bad, infact if we had enough boats we could be merchants and trade luxury items and the such.

Hydro electricity in arctic waters are hard because if parts get cold and freeze up things can stop working or break to the point where repair would cost alot, though I suppose it's possible to come up with a design where this doesn't occur.

But anyways small wind turbines would be good, not the huge one but just a couple small ones on everyone house coupled with solar electricity and a generator if we need it.

04484b No.1475

>>1463

We could probably convince the greenlandic government to give us money to install larger wind turbines on the pretext that the excess electricity generated went into the grid to benefit all greenlanders in the area. However wind turbines are very aesthetically unappealling, though we could always put them out of sight.

fadb31 No.1505

>>1456

Biofuel requires growing crops and that takes land from food crops. You really don't need more electricity than a few solar panels for this sort of commune. Passive energy design is the key.

We get a barge to have some housing on and then we can petition (?) the government to give us a little bit of land because the purpose of the board is to also help Greenlands ecosystem expand.

I propose we use land reclamation to fill in some of the Inland fjords to make fertile valleys that Reindeer and Musk Ox can graze in

So what's everyone's trade here? What could you offer the project if we were all there right now fresh off the boat, assuming you have all the necessary tools with you?

Right off the bat I'm going to admit I'm an unskilled worker. I did some labor-intensive work with my dad years ago, but nothing I really learned from it. I could probably hang drywall, tape joints, texture it, and give it some coats of paint and semigloss, but that's it. I know the theory of cutting down trees safely, but haven't had enough practice with a chainsaw to safely cut anything taller than 30-40 feet; my face cuts are garbage. I'd have to admit boys, I'd be fairly worthless to everybody right now, but I'd absolutely be willing to work as hard as I could doing grunt work.

Do we have any carpenters, plumbers, electricians, anyone who knows how to set foundations and lay slab? We need solid tradesmen immediately

We'll probably need a veterinarian.

Whatever you think you're good at, list it here.

Been doing construction since i was a early teen, know all about carpentry, and concrete laying. Also thinking of pursuing engineering in college. Besides from that ive had experience doing innawoods shit, hunting, fishing with just a string and a hook, building quick shelters. And i know some electrical basics but i really just know how to wire something to a fusebox.

I'm going into computer science. I have experience in construction and understand how to create footings. I grew up in the middle of nowhere so I have good outdoors skills.

Just found out about /greenland/ on /polpol/.

If this kicks off I'm ready to study anything that is required by the community. I'm a hard worker and mainly done gardening in my career.

I know how to create efficient composts etc.

Also got a good library of ebooks from krystallnacht on sustainable gardening.

Mainly been interested in studying theology but a lifelong project like this I could commit to with my life.

I've also done projects and documentaries on enviromental politics and also met with many high ranking officials and politicians, so I would be an active and a good addition to the community as I have some experience of the bureocratic lingo in politics.

Maybe we should consider alternatives, as some Eastern European dountries sell land pretty cheap, and in the future could sell for alot of money? The Faroe islands also seem pretty good for location. Look for example at www.inni.fo

Oh, and to add, Iain Banks' 'The Wasp Factory' captures life in rural Scotland quite well (youths still gathering to get shit-faced, nothing much in the way of culture or events going on).

It's not a life people appreciate when they're born in to it, but certainly one that people chase given the rise of commuter villages and the rocketing of country house prices in the past couple of decades here in the UK.

Refugees are spilling through there from Russia. You don't want to set up anything there as it will be trampled and looted once things intesify further.

6a2d19 No.1444[Reply]

so in pic related is a Public greenhouse which are becoming more and more common in Greenland, and as the temperature warms for some crops these are not even needed.

Though among these crops are strawberries, potatoes, carrots and the like; I propose we take a different route to the farming of Arctic conditions, instead of trying to get non Arctic plants to do well we use Native arctic plants and try and pollinate them with different species to increase the gain.

such as:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empetrum_nigrum

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilberry

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccinium_vitis-idaea

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juniper_berry

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelica_archangelica

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctostaphylos_alpina

and we can also get into Brewing like what has been tried in :https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenland_Brewhouse however they went bankrupt so we would need a different business strategy for that.

so lets discuss ==Practical== means of farming in Greenland, I might get into some Aquaculture and perhaps irrigation of the hot springs to warm the ponds.

c3d4e3 No.1450

>>1444

potato expert here yukon gold is native to alaska, itll grow anywhere

8debf4 No.1455

I'm not sure if this is on topic but tree plantations for the necessary wood would be good. Trees from siberia grow well in Greenland.

Is aquaponics viable for this? Also there is higher demand for some foods like cabbage I believe but they're expensive asf, we could have a monopoly over the market for some foods like this.

3e2982 No.1464

So guys lets try and find on Wikipedia some plants that are edible that can grow well in Arctic/Antarctic conditions

>>1450

Details?

>>1455

Well we could grow trees but too many would hurt the ecosystem because most of the large animals there eat grass and can't survive in forests and then the wolfs that prey on them would die then other things would breed to much and yadda yadda yadda shit gets fucked, though Some would be good, just not too many trees.

Aquaponics /may/ be a little viable, in a Greenhouse but probably wouldn't work out to well in the winter.

True those foods are more expensive but I doubt people are going to pay half their Money for things like Cabbage and fucking vegetables. I suggest we grow potatoes/Luxury foods and make profit out of those.

1f957e No.1470

>>1464

I mispoke on the yukon golds, but most potatoes only need a temp of 40 to germinate and after that you can grow them in plant them in spring or fall, for a double harvest. The spring harvest would come soon due to the longer daylight hours and im not surr about the fall harvest since the daylight hours could drag us deep into winter and kill the crops. That said potatos can grow to some extent in the teens, but grow best in 50-70°F which is basically a greenland summer. So we probably wouldnt be able to plant in the fall but due to the long days we might be able to do two grow cycles in the spring and summer seasons.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disko_Island

for an example, it is one of the only places on earth where native Iron is found without native Origin.

and more:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemstone_industry_in_Greenland

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geology_of_Greenland we could set up "camps" near these sites where we could build Potential Greenhouses, farms, small herds, and even stock on Luxury Items that we can sell and use to Obtain funds.

now legal issues aside, if we were able to do this we could raise enough money to actually do a difference and do major endeavors to help wildlife, though I'll do a different thread on that later or something.

discuss?
