If our current understanding of quantum physics is correct then there will almost always be a turn of events that results in someone not dying, therefore if there is a remote possibility that someone can be immortal, then they will be immortal.

Love and compassion is not what it takes, if can acknowledge the illusion of the ego while you are doing thing that are for personal gain, then maybe. I think some people may be able to have those thing hollow, there is such thing, even proposed by Buddhists.
