I've never understood why people are optimistic about things, cynicism is more grounded in reality and makes more sense. I mean, think about it, if you expect everything to go well, you'll be disappointed when it doesn't, but if you expect everything to go wrong, you'll not be disappointed when it does, and if everything works out you'll be pleasantly surprised.

So why would people remain in the land of optimism when it's neither reasonable nor real? Their feels? That probably has something to do with it, I doubt many people like life's cynical attributes, but that doesn't negate reality. Ignoring the grim reality seems to be a common trend in people, and that's really what this thread is about: Why do so many people deny reality and instead choose to live as if they are in an idealistic fantasy?

things literally everyone believes

But the question is why do people believe that their feels and opinions are more grounded in reality than, well, reality? It's real to them, sure, but are so many people incapable of distinguishing the difference?

Cynicism is just as foolish as optimism. No matter what you choose to believe, life is completely unpredictable. No matter what your personal philosophy, the world will never make any sense. Good things and bad things will happen to you in no particular order or number whatsoever, and there isn't shit you can do about it.

You aren't smarter, you're not any more ground in reality than the rest of us, because we're all clueless.

You yourself live in an idealistic fantasy in which the answer to all questions in life is found, that it's as simple as being a constant stream of shit.

Reality is a vast, complex, incomprehensible thing that is filled with countless factors you will die before even bothering to think of being aware of.

You're basically choosing to pick rock every time you play rock paper scissors and yelling that it always wins.

Pessimism is superior to optimism because optimism is essentially saying "Everything's gonna be okay!" despite that not being the case. Pessimism, on the other hand, says "Shit happens, so expect it." Neither claims to know what will happen, only what to expect. If you're betting on a horse race and you have an unbeaten horse going against a horse that's never won a single race, the optimist would bet on the latter and the pessimist would bet on former. pessimists look at things based on what is likely to happen, not what they want to happen. Optimists are the exact opposite, looking at things based on how they want things to be rather than how they likely will be.

Pessimism and optimism aren't statements of how the world works, their just expectations of how events will play out, where pessimism is expecting the statistical likelihood, and optimism is expecting whatever you want to happen.

I think being an optimist is more depressing in itself then being cynical.

Your hopes get crushed every time but you refuse to see the reality and choose to escape from. It. It's worse because society encourages this as well, so they are stuck in an endless loop.
