While grognard largely does not have any rules and so you're free to post whatever meta stuff you like, I'm going to set this one as a general meta thread for now for anyone coming over to get away from the current shitstorm engulfing /tg/.

f40777 No.167[Reply]

As a board, collaborate to design a board game using your boards name as a key element.

Rules

Game must be playable for 2-4 players.

Game must be a race (Snakes and Ladders), non-linear adventure/collect-a-thon (Talisman, Arkham Horror) or wargame (Shogun).

Game must not be a dungeon crawl (Hero Quest), resource gatherer (Catan) or property buy/trade (Monopoly) as a primary focus, but may use elements of these kinds of

games. Card Games and Tabletop Games that use a board (Munchkin Quest, Tabletop RPG's with a mat) do not count as board games for the purpose of this contest.

Game must have at least one static game board.

Game must primarily feature the board name as a major element.

Game must have no more than 200 pieces (dice, tokens, cards all count).

All content for the game must be submitted into threads (idea development process, strawpoll results, tokens, rules pdf etc) and the threads should be archived for

varification so one person doesn't just submit something they already had available.

Game must be completed before 1st December.

Context (why)

Board owner Me continues to do nothing about the state of the board and there is clearly a lot mixed feelings on whether people should stay and fight any shitposting

with holding the line and 'getting shit done' or if people should move on to another board with dedicated moderation. There is a lot of distrust right now, so

what better way to settle it than by proving which /tg/ can get shit done. This challenge will be posted on /tg/, /snb/, /d20/, /grognard/ and any other boards that

rose up during the spam as a shelter. If I forgot your board and you want to be involved, post it.

Context (Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

There's GURPS stuff specifically designed for modern settings.

Unless you meant, like "Shadowrun, but not so far in the future and based off DnD races", in terms of how to do the setting, in which case I guess the description is pretty much how you do it. Personally, cyberpunk + fantasy races never really seemed to mix well, in my opinion.

Personally I love it, but it doesn't really feel like it combines well with fantasy. Some stuff doesn't.

Anyways, if you're just looking for a familiar system, rather than moving onto something like GURPS, would D20 Modern be close enough?

How many people that are serious into tabletop gaming have come up with their own system?

I, and a friend of mine, have each come up with systems. I've got a feeling that many others have as well. Considering that I'd figure someone out there has come up with something better than the standard d20 system or G.U.R.P.S..

Anyone here know a resource to try to look up these other systems?

Interesting concept, and I would enjoy seeing it developed further. Even if it in itself is not a complete system, developing it as a theory/mechanism for handling health could be of benefit to other people developing systems, or modifying existing systems.

HP's always been a bit of a problem, and I think tying it into other game mechanics, as you're proposing, would allow greater depth and perhaps better simulation of health, while not spending an inordinate amount of time calculating it and whatnot - since it's also being used for other stuff, if you get what I'm saying.

414f5e No.33

>>20
I wrote a fully fledged rules set that was minimalistic, easy to run, easy to learn, and still had depth and it just got tossed because it wasn't 3.5 or something they already had used.

It's kind of the same thing as writing a huge (like 20-30 pages worth of prepared material) sandbox. If you get a group that just wants to be railroaded and led along some huge apocalyptic save the world path every time you're going to get burned, bad.

a11eef No.34

>>33
I know your pain. People getting so very invested in one system that they refuse to spread out and learn other systems.

I don't think it helps when you have many volumes of splat books to further enhance and expand upon a single system. Lots of money can be spent on a single system. Lots to read, lots to learn, and little reasons to branch out because of that.

I can't fault the companies making the books for trying to stay in business, but it can suck when lots of players have no desire to try new things.

Do you still have your system written out? Was it digital, or written in some notebook somewhere?

>>23
That was my idea. Though it was very basic to the point where things like 'race' and 'class' would be shoehorned in much like how HP seems shoehorned in other systems. Because of that I've kept it in my mind, but haven't fleshed it out much.

414f5e No.39

>>34
An observation I have had about splatbooks: everyone has their own pet splatbook and usually only that single person knows its mechanics. Invariably they being using more obscure / complicated mechanics until they might as well just be making the shit up themselves because nobody else has the ability or the time to care. There's also the unfortunately common occurrence of some guy who comes into a premade setting and wants to bring his new splatbook race or class into it no matter what and will hate you until the end of time if you don't change absolutely everything to accommodate him. This inevitably pisses of the other players and changes the D in DM to daycare.

Yeah I wrote it all out in a notebook.

I have never been a fan of HP either. HP and XP have never really sat well with me along with a lot of the other things you pointed out including class and race (not as archetypes but as defined mechanical roles). For HP I have tried a few things and can't actually remember which one I settled on. As far as XP goes, I just ended up scaling the leveling mechanic in my system off of natural criticals. It's not 1:1 and it scales exponentially but still makes the leveling process more exciting and erratic.

09003b No.61

>snakes
I'm gonna guess you mean snake people. Boring if done as a generic beast race (often pinned into a real-world culture, usually mayan/aztec or egyptian themed).

Interesting if done as a kind of precursor civ to humanity - not direct forebears, obviously, but as an earlier biped/tool-using species having competed with humanity in its early stages but eventually lost the race. May be primitive or close to extinction.

If you meant actual snakes, I have no feelings one way or the other.

I like how the pathfinder setting did it, personally–the serpentfolk were a major power in the incredibly distant past, only to get nearly wiped out in a war. They fled to the underdark, where most degenerated into mindless savages. But you've got little pockets and enclaves of "true" serpentfolk around, usually in ruins and things.

601d2f No.106

It's no good for freeform.

While location based damage is cool and all. I'd rather it be used as a penalty condition you get from being hit.

Having to choose where you're gonna aim isn't terribly conducive to trying to do a cool fight unless that aimed part is being used to do something.

Also you got some things to keep in mind with the freeform audience.

First thing is that a chunk of them are deathly afraid of mechanics no matter how simple it is. And or dislike the chance element because they're shitters who can't stand the thought their precious character might not have their way.

Also due to the various genres in freeform that can give you super powered characters. It would be an imperative to figure out a way to do "powers". Powers being magic, super powers, and the over the top anime fighting moves.

For those of you new to all this, The Runed Age is an upcoming RPG created by me based on a magic system I debuted on halfchan's /tg/ a couple of years back.

You can find more info on the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/stormforgeproductions

What's your GMing style?

I'm more of a 'deal with it as it comes' type of GM. I'll write up the major NPCs (BBEG, town mayor, so on) and their motives/goals. I then come up with the general setting and how NPCs in the area would act and react. After that I let the PCs come in and go with what they want. Often times this means coming up with new NPCs on the fly, but that's pretty fun to do.

Any of the NPCs plots and plans will remain in motion even if the PCs are ignoring them. So if there was some Evil Necromancer trying to summon a giant horde of undead they'll work at that and if not stopped, get it done. The PCs will then have a larger issue to deal with, but it also gives more openings to how they will, when they will, and if they'll even be against it (if not join up with the BBEG).

I find that I'm pretty bad at riddles and puzzles found in dungeons. Because of my methods I don't spend much time writing up future encounters leading to the more complex types of encounters being tougher for me to come up with.

Uh, hey, /tg/
I heard about tabletop roleplay only recently, and I've been wanting to try it ever since.
The problem is,almost nobody even knows what it is in my country. Or at least in my city.
So my question is, are there any sites where I can play D&D or something online?

these are good options for playing onlie with other people, although, == vassal (engine) == was spelt wrong.

Also, don't fall for the trap of trying to play something complex for the first time, especially if you're going to DM.

Not that a board split is necessary at this time, but this also seems like a great place to discuss older systems and OSR that usually get drowned out by the extreme 3.0+/Warhammer focus. Back on halfchan, I felt like it was more that the board was too fast to support it rather than a general lack of interest. **What I mean to say is that everyone was a bunch of casuals who only play one game religiously*

It's not just that it's the same three games, but also that they (mostly D&D) are always used for a style of play that they just don't fit. You rarely hear of anyone doing a dungeon crawl or hexploration with item management and shit, even in AD&D, which is the only place the rules really shine.

I like the old art better too. Something is flat and lifeless with a lot of digital art, even if it's more technical skill put into it.

I can only muster so many fucks before going on StoryGames seems like a good idea.

I imagine it's the same thing as with vidya. A lot of older vidya with shittier graphics had to convey stuff with their art style rather than with the models and textures so much.

Similarly I imagine when you're using a more basic printer, as they would have been back then, and .pdfs were not even a thing, you probably couldn't count on the pictures' quality, and it was more important and acceptable to be a bit more exaggerated and intense.

Agreed 100%. I was beginning to think I was the only one. It had jaded me to the point where I hardly play traditional games anymore at all.
