 No.1706

Posted on halfchan's /gsg/, but might as well discuss it here

Basically, seeing as CK2 now starts in 769, I thought it was quite inaccurate that there still is Orthodox/Catholic as two separate Christian religions. What's more is that when it was discussed on the forums, Paradox's answer was basically "too hard, it's never happening". So anyway I've decided to make a mod that recreates the Schism. So here's the main features
>In Old Gods and Charlemagne starts, all Orthodox and Catholics are now "Chalcedonian Christians", the basic form of Christianity before the schism occured https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalcedonian_Christianity
>Every Chalcedonian character has either a "Latin Rites" or "Greek Rites" trait, which symbolises which set of Rites they use, Latin Rites being the Rites followed by Greek Christians and Latin Rites being the official Rites of the Church.
>Second Council of Nicaea event which converts the Byzantine Emperor to Chalcedonian from Iconoclast. This is to prevent the inevitable Iconoclast railroading.
>All Orthodox heresies are now Chalcedonian heresies, and will change to Orthodox heresies during the schism. Catholic heresies shouldn't appear until later so there's no point making them Chalcedonian
>A number of small events that lower moral authority of Chalcedonian. Some decisions and events, including the final schism, will only be available once moral authority is low enough. This is so it is possible to prevent the schism (hard, but possible)

the mod will be compatible with all graphics mods and any mod that doesn't alter character/province history, religions, or landed titles. I'm trying to make it as compatible and simple as possible.

All opinions/criticism are welcome

Great idea, bro! Would be happy to test it, I do want this to be made.

you butchered that

Anyway, opinions:
Shouldn't the visigoths be arian/partially arian? If not at least a few arian provinces might make things fun.

Not a single pagan/heretic province in the chalcedonian world might make things too easy for catholics.

I'd love to see a "byzantine influence" in kingdoms (or even in single provinces) so not only the byzzies will go iconoclast.

Would province modifiers work better than traits? They could represent influence of different cults over the people and they would let the player/AI actually choose what to do, with repercussions if they go against their will.

Lovin' the idea, thou, I just feel it might turn out too deterministic.

>you butchered that
sorry a bit tired.
basically every Chalcedonian character has one of two traits, Latin Rites or Greek Rites. Latin Rites will cause the character to become Catholic during the Schism, and Greek Rites will cause the character to become Orthodox.

>Shouldn't the visigoths be arian/partially arian?

the visigoths at that time weren't arians, they were about 300 or 400 years before that date, but the north African provinces should be Arian. I'll just make Arianism a heresy.

>byzantine influence

I've been seriously considering this. I think it should be a province modifier to determine if the province will become Catholic or Orthodox, but the trait should determine if the character becomes Catholic or Orthodox. also there is an decision you can take to change from Latin to Greek Rites, and the AI will only do it if moral authority and their relationship with the pope drops low enough.

It might be a little railroaded, I mean there are only two things that could happen, either the schism occurs or it doesn't. if you are the Byzantine Emperor you should be able to do either fairly easily.

I guess the rites trait should heavily affect your relations with the emperor. A strong emperor might get more people to stand by orthodoxy, or catholicism to get away from him politically.

Church laws could also be useful to determine if the character becomes catholic or orthodox, or even heretic.

Have you thought about other would-be-schisms? Like the pope giving "autonomy" to lollards or cathars, a la coptic.

well every character will have a slightly positive relation with "like" rites and a slightly negative relation with opposite rites, kind of like when you have the "Proud vs. Humble" opinion modifier.

Church laws would be a great thing to start managing. I suppose I could have something like "free belief" which would mean all churches can practice whatever set of rites they wish, all the way up to "official rites only" where only the top liege's rites can be practiced.

well I can't do much about autonomy/autocephaly in the church because that's hardcoded, but I will allow the schism to happen as any orthodox heresy. this means that if the emperor is iconoclast, iconoclasm will become the primary religion and orthodox will be a heresy of that.

sure, as soon as it's playable I'll let a few of you test it out.

btw thanks for the help

Might also interesting to disband the Second Nicean council or prevent the schism.

 No.1826

I've just updated ck2 with way of life, and there's no problems so far. sorry about not posting much, but I'm still working on this.

>>1781
if you're the Byzantine Emperor, you can choose to ignore the demand of the Pope. it will give you a piety and prestige hit but you can remain Iconoclast.

 No.2013

Ok guys, the mod is nearly complete. I'm just doing a bit of testing to make sure there's no fuckups. my plan was to get it out for the new year, sorry for being so overdue I am doing it for free

 No.2016

I love this! I was disappointed in the lack of schism-simulating events.

> but the north African provinces should be Arian

The Arianization of Roman North Africa was cut short and reversed by the 6th-century Byzantine reconquest; in fact all Vandals had been expelled from Roman Africa by the late 530s, leaving the Latin-speaking Afro-Roman and Berber populations (both Chalcedonian) behind.

Conant's book "Staying Roman" has a good and wide-ranging discussion of the conditions in Roman North Africa from the Vandal conquest up to the eve of Islam in the region.

This looks great!

Does anyone know where I can find any of these mods?

sorry it's been so long lads. been a busy semester.

anyway I'm on break and my autism bux just came through so I don't really need to get a job and I've got plenty of time. I'll try finish it soon, but with paradox's relentless updates it's hard to keep on top of everything.

main change I've made instead of chalcedonian splitting into two religions, catholic will split off orthodox.

also, seeing as paradox's religions are really fucked (west african pagan being in the same group as slavic paganism, no norse/germanic split) I'll try to fix a bit more up. but I'll release it on the workshop as soon as a working schims is happening

so this is what happens after the schism occurs. obviously the schism will occur later on, I just set it at this day to test it quickly.

right now, it's basically the opposite of the mend schism event. thoughts?

btw the conversion rate for catholic/orthodox is pretty high, so that should clear up quickly enough
