Just start colonizing up and down the cost as much as you can. While you won't be able to stop them entirely, with any luck by the time they get a foothold your central empire should be far away from your coastal provinces.

Well, I'm trying… I have alliances with Norway, Brittany, and French Canada, but France itself is already fabricating claims on me and is out for blood. One of my possible missions is "Placate France" but that is literally impossible.

At the very least go up and seize/raze any colonies they have, if you can. They probably don't have many forts yet as well. Just try to avoid combat unless you have a huge advantage.

I did exactly that. France gave me a favorable peace deal only taking a few of my provinces, and then coring them allowing me to reform my government and begin westernization.

I guess I wasn't totally screwed, I have a chance to come back.

I've never actually completed a game as a New World country. I played as Aztecs once but it was surprisingly easy. By 1480 I had defeated and annex all the other Central American countries and had to just wait around to the Europeans to arrive. As soon as they did I put a colony next to one of there and Westernised. The I got bored and stopped playing because I basically just had to sit there making colonies and waiting for my tech to catch up to theirs.

By the way, when I make colonies even if they are right next to my core land it says they cannot have less than 50% autonomy. This seems daft because it's not really a colony in the European way, it's just me expanding my core country. Do you know of a way to change that?
