Started as Brabant released from Burgundy, have been allied with France from the very beginning so they "trust me implicitly," even after I converted to Protestant.

I fought off 5 ridiculous punitive force wars with the help of France, but Britain is getting too big for my liking, not to mention their infringement on my colonies and trade. Portugal is also getting too close for comfort… although I don't even have a big enough army to take on Portugal alone.

pretty much this. Get as much as coastal provinces as possible so you can build more boats. Quality wise, you can't be at par against UK yet since most of their modifiers are navy focused.
