I want to play Hearts of Iron 3 or at least try some Darkest Hour (I was advised to try Darkest hour before any HoI game)
But whether is DH or HoI3, im blocked in what to do. I more or less know how to control the games, but dont know how to start a game…
Any advise? What country should I play?
In the case of HoI3…Is the AI automatizacion good? If yes, in what should I let the Ai control?
No.2976
darkest hour [with kaiserreich] is fun and tied for my favorite behind fallout's doomsday mod for HOI2, but in kaiserreich you can play all the major nations, and even some minors like mongolia and still have a great time and have divergent scenarios happen, something that normally doesn't happen in HOI games.
HOI3 is very good, but is autistic to the extreme. You can manage OOBs down to the brigade, which some people like myself love but others hate. The combat is very in depth and takes the previous games and simply improves on it.
AI issues in HOI3 are one of the silly things, but you can't expect much from paradox in that. Play HOI3 a dozen or more times, then you'll probably play a few more times to make the world national socialist, but otherwise I don't get rock solid at the prospect of playing WW2 over and over again aside from challenge runs.
HOI3 is a great war game. The narrow focus allows it to be a great WW2 game. Once you play all the major nations and some minors, there's not much else to do in terms of divergence-causing.
Darkest Hour with Kaiserreich is one of my favorite GSG games, still, because I can pick any nation and still see shit that I've never seen happen. At its core KR is an alternate universe mod, but it goes beyond that allowing in-game divergences in huge ways [Russia can go communist or stay the Russian nation, for example] and includes many events and immersive world-forming blocs take life.
I wish there was a KR for HOI3, it'd be amazing. Knowing that HOI4 is going to be junk, maybe modders will finally get serious about accepting HOI3 as a base for modding. The systems are good, the game just needs love.

I have started a game of Darkest Hour as Germany in 1936.
I did send volunteers & resources to Nationalist Spain when the Civil War started.
The problem is that by 1937, The Nationalist only have about 2-3 provinces in Spain, while the rest is Republican.
Is this normal? Im worried for the nationalist, And I send them from time to time the resources they would need.
Perhaps should I worry? Should I send some divisions to them? I want the nationalist to win….

I've been playing DH with the Grand Campaign mod recently, it's quite fun. History is utterly broken though if Germany wins WW1, there just aren't enough variables in the game to cope with all the possible outcomes.
I would pay all my neetbux for a company to make a grand strat starting from the early 20th century which has an incredibly variable history. That'd be awesome.

I have a question about diplomacy in Darkest Hour.
How do I bring countries to my alliance? Being in 1938, I have a bunch of countries with +100 influence, and share more or less the same goverment (Autocracies, while I am NatSoc).
Yet everytime I bring the "bring Alliance option, there is still 0% of chance.

I have another question about Germany.
How the fuck I defeat France?
When I start war with Poland in 1939, France makes war with me. And regardless of what I do, their trooops donts stop coming:
-If I declare war to Belgium-Netherlands, neverthless, the fuckers last a long way to die, while the french try to push me.
-If I go directly against france, the french dont die, even If I use all my troops in the western line to attack the three french provinces.
-Mind you, I have Spain as allied, and it helps against France, but not a lot either
How I defeat France fast?

Do what the other anon said, you need to plop enough troops on your side of the maginot line to keep the French from breaking through while you deal with Poland. This shouldn't be your main force, just enough to defensively hold the line while you wait for your troops to be remobilized to the western front. Then you go through Belgium. It's just like real life! And make sure you have a decent amount of armor divisions, you can blow a hole through the French lines and start blazing through the land without stopping.

Right now im interesed in first dealing with England & Norway (First Norway, then England). And for that im building about 14 transports (They will be finished in about april of 1940), besides the 4-5 surviving transports I have. Plus more troops & tanks.
Should I deal with Norway and then England first? I make this question if perhaps Russia declares war with me before or during that. I have the pact, but I dont know how the AI as Russia usually works in this game, if perhaps Russia tends to declare war in some specific year, for example.

Playing as Germany in Darkest Hour. after dealing with France & England, Im trying to fight Russia, ready to start Barbarossa in april-may of 1941.
How do I into encirclement & pockets? I hear this alot, but im not sure how to do it.
I have as allies near Russia: Romania, Bulgaria, Finland, Hungary, Turkey & Greece. Also I have Italy & France.

No.3375
>>3367
Using your armor is a pretty good way to encircle. If you can punch a hole through with your armored divisions while your infantry holds the main line, you can just send the armor back behind, and there you go. Try to put your armor away from the largest Soviet concentrations, that way you can break through as quick as possible.
No.3376
>>3375
So I make regiments (groups of divisions) of only soft units, and then of only hard units apart?
Thats what you mean? I generally create mixed regiments, or ones of 1 hard unit & 2-3 soft units.
No.3377
>>3375
Also, what do you mean by "put your armor away from the largest Soviet concentrations"?
You mean using hard units to attack procinces with less divisions, and try to capture province around the province/region with the most enemy divisions?
Thats what you mean?
No.3378
>>3376
>>3377
Yes, generally you don't want mixed regiments - especially for mobile warfare. It's alright to mix in heavy tanks and other slow heard units to give your infantry some extra strength, but any mobile division needs to be just that - mobile. Light/med tanks, armored cars, and the like move much faster than most infantry, thus you don't want to lump your infantry with them, especially for encirlement.
What I mean by 'puuting the armor away' specifically is that you should plop your mobile regiments at a weak point in the enemy lines so they can break through. This shouldn't comprise the majority of your forces - you don't want the main front line to fall. Most of your troops, including possibly slower armor, should be holding back the majority of the Soviet troops. While they do that, your mobile division sneak around to the back, and trap them. Am I clearer now?
No.3379
>>3378
Yes, I think.
I attack with mobile troops, and if they win the battle, i let them advance, while the infatry stays to resit any soviet attack, right?

I started on HOI3, and learned it after some time. You just need to play through it a couple of times without reloading or rage quitting.
I started first as Italy, which was a lot of fun and gave a nice balance between focus on navy and army. I got steamrolled after the Eastern front collapsed, but still fun.
Also, I didn't automate anything except for convoys in my first game. When I didn't have enough convoys anymore, I took manual control to keep my forces supplied.
No.3523
How do I deal with americans? this game discourages putting 10 divisions on a single tile, but that doesn't stop the americans from having 12 to 15. basically their way of playing is to outlast you with organization and it always works. 30k troops versus 100k troops and the 100k troops win because they managed to kill 2~3k of my troops. all my troops are left with 0 organization and are trapped inside behind enemy lines and gobbled up, making me lose them forever.
I do not understand what "organization" is supposed to represent and how it is real in real life. 30,000 fully supplied people with guns aren't going to all surrender because 2,000 of them died. in real life, soldiers only surrender when they have no supplies and will starve to death if they don't surrender soon or if they suffer too many casualties. where are those battles where many people die? how do many millions from a country die in world war II when there are only about 200 to 1,000 deaths in a battle?
this "organization" mechanic seems made up to try to add some balance or something to the game

Organization works roughly like morale in other Paradox titles. When it hits 0, your troops retreat, even if they are at full strength. However, your troops don't surrender unless all adjacent provinces are occupied or otherwise inaccessible. In fact, they never surrender. A unit may have 1 guy left with no chance of reinforcement, and he'll still only surrender if he can't move anywhere else because of lack of supplies, low infrastructure, provinces occupied by enemies etc.
>this "organization" mechanic seems made up to try to add some balance or something to the game
Maybe so, but it still makes perfect sense. If a division is upbeat and demoralized from a particularly brutal battle, or from having been exposed to a prolonged campaign without rest, they start making mistakes and don't fight as vigorously. You might say that simply retreating because your troops are exhausted isn't always feasible IRL, but this is a game. And games need consistent mechanics.
