Paradox just announced Stellaris, a real time strategy game in space (a 4X from the looks of it). I had hoped for something historic, but perhaps I'll be turned around if the gameplay looks promising. The game is to be released in February 2016. What do you think, is PDS making a mistake by departing from the safe confines of history?

 No.4364

Looks bretty intredasting

 No.4365

I think it will be cool to have a new version of Distant Worlds.

We will see how it goes. I was hoping for Vicky 3, but we all know that will never happen.

>I was hoping for Vicky 3, but we all know that will never happen.

I think that's for the better, anon. Seeing how shitty HOI4 is turning out to be, wouldn't want to see how they would fuck up a potential Victoria 3.

Didn't the guy who coded the economy system in Vicky 2 leave?

I really hope they never make Vicky 3.

>Didn't the guy who coded the economy system in Vicky 2 leave?

That's what I heard a while back from some fag on either this board or some /gsg/ thread on /v/.

Now whether that's true, I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

Johan has said that Vic3 won't be made until the game has an "internal champion" within the company, which there's not at present. Of course, the company wouldn't admit to having such a champion until announcement day.

The target audience doesn't care about the 19th century, the game wouldn't sell well enough

:^)

That's why they're making a space game instead :DDD

 No.4388

Just waiting for the 6 major DLCs and 20 or so music packs with 5000 model packs.

Seriously though:

They said it will be easy for new players to get into, unlike EU4 and CK2. I am not kidding.

 No.4392

But CK2 and EU4 are easy to get into.

Yeah, but that's what Johan said.

pls no

I had hoped this dumbing down of late was caused by Podcat, and that there were still some guys left in PDS to keep the hardcore gamers in mind. Are we doomed to suffer terrible graphics and TBS from fucking Matrix now?

I'll choose mechanics/gameplay over graphics any time, yet claiming that graphics count for nothing is silly. Of course I would rather look at a top notch UI and a nice high resolution map, than a panel from the 90's and a 2D map with square tiles. If you say you wouldn't, you're only fooling yourself.

No, that's a gameplay change.

You're dragging statements out of your arse. EUIV looks terrible, but you can't argue against the fact that Paradox games look a thousand times more pleasing than any Matrix game.

>>4398

Not if the gameplay stays the same with a 3D map, and the tiles only are carved more "naturally", but otherwise serve as squares.

 No.4400

>>4399

I'm dragging statements from what you said:

>>4394

Here you seem >imply that anything that follows in the way of CK2 and EU4 "suffer from terrible graphics" even though EU4 is objectively better because it has things like detailed units, realtime lighting, and 3D terrain mapping.

But then here >>4396 you say that graphics are important.

So really, you're just confusing everything.

If I play a grand strategy game, graphics are the last thing I'm thinking about.

 No.4405

I'm worried there'll be too much spore/civ bullshit in this game and it'll take away from the GSG aspects/.

 No.4407

>>4400

I don't play EUIV, although CKII looks decent enough. As does Vic2 (for its time at least), and the interface of HOI4 looks good. And like I said, gameplay trumps graphics, but I'd rather have both. And so if PDS stays on its current trajectory in dumbing games down, I will probably turn to Matrix, even if their graphics are stuck in 2005.

 No.4409

>>4399

If they are carved more naturally, then it will change the gameplay.

A square will always have 4 places to move from (8 if allowing for diagonal movement).

A game with more naturally drawn will lead to some areas connecting to more or less than other areas. This will end up giving some places more strategic value based purely on the terrain.

Not even sure how you'd have a 3D game that plays like a 2D game, as it adds another whole dimension. Look at 2D vs. 3D platformers, they play completely differently.

The closest you can get is the 2.5D buzzword which is really just a 2D platformer+buzzword.

2D vs 3D shooters also. 3D adds the aspect of enemies being above and below you.

Going from 2D to 3D is not just graphics.

 No.4412

This is Galactic Civilizations with the name filed off.

 No.4416

>>4409

A "naturally" carved "square" might also have 4 tiles to move from. Any border might be narrower or wider, but in sum it's perfectly possible to retain the same mechanics with naturally drawn borders.

I'm not talking about Wolfenstein vs. Wolfenstein 3D. By 3D I'm referring to the mere visual aspect, i.e. watching the map from a different angle than just a top-down 2D view. Not sure what you mean about 2.5D.

 No.4417

>>4416

>watching the map from a different angle than just a top-down 2D view.

That's really just a 2D game though.

>Not sure what you mean about 2.5D.

Trine 2 is a good example. It's just a 2D platformer, but some items seem to be further back than others. Thus they advertise it as 2.5D.

Maybe I'm just incredibly naïve, but I have a slimmer of hope that Paradox isn't going to fuck this up and that maybe, just maybe, Stellaris will be a contender to dethrone Distant Worlds, at least until Distant Worlds 2 is released.

I don't know, the few features they've released so far look promising, especially the focus on making sure late game isn't just boring map painting. I really like exploration in my games, and it could be fun to look around and research the history of species long since dead and shit like that.

The claim that they will make it easier to get into than EU4 however is really trying my nerves. EU4 was not hard to get into at all, it was so abstract that player agency was very limited and that made the game piss easy as a result : just follow all the limitations hard-coded in the game and the flow of your mana, you can't go wrong. I seriously hope these 3 icons with + numbers next to them aren't mana flow. Mana single-handedly fucked EU4, and it will fuck HoI4.

You can't make a good GSG if your target audience is cawwadoody lackwits; such a game wouldn't even be GSG. I want something that's at least as complex and fun as DW. God DW is fucking amazing. They claim it as an inspiration so maybe…just maybe…

I guess we'll find out in a few months. I'll pirate for sure. In the meantime, don't fuck up Paradox.

 No.4467

Just play Aurora or Distant Worlds, this will be dumbed down.
