- No empty provinces, all filled in with new nations. Most of these new nations are tribal in nature.
- Large number of provinces, but all placed within the original area used in vanilla Rome
- Also has barbarian invasions from off the edge of the map
- Assaults on fortifications removed, thus preventing stupid AI from making suicide attacks when they could win by just waiting
- Number of events added in relation to states paying tribute to you, including the possibility of peacefully annexing long-term tributaries with good relations
- Overland trade possible without needing roads, making requests for trade access actually relevant
- Character traits have more effects, some good and some bad
- Republics now elect some positions (not generals) automatically for you, but you can veto any choices you don't like
- Easier to ally with other nations not part of the same religion as you
