Hello, /hack/, in my years as a programmer, i've seen some retarded shit. About 90% of that retarded shit has been done by "hacker".
Now let me explain, today i firmly believe there's NO such thing as a real hacker. There really isn't. It all just edgy teenagers downloading shit(which is usually NSA botnets, or botnets period) and no one who is really good with computers does anything like that, because they have well paying jobs and lives.Face it, you are all wannabes and, believe it or not, all being watched by the FBI, they are just waiting for you to do something big enough to lock you up for life.
TL;DR hackers no longer exist. They are all dumb teenagers downloading shit other people made

Well I don't define "hackers" as a group of script-kiddies. My definition of hackers are the people who has the hacking mindset and find diffrent ways of solving problem. So yes hackers still exist but many of them are script-kiddies.
No.341
While there certainly are kids like that, you are not even close. Sure, alot of people have different jobs, but being a "hacker" is about understanding computers and getting the most out of it. Not pointing LOIC at someone's website. Cyber Security has never been bigger, and hackers are increasing in number every day.

>>341"hackers no longer exist". I do agree that kids with LOIC targeting some small websites aren't hacker. Hackers are not hackers as there where in some years ago, thats the sad thing about it all. There are hackers around the world but they don't wanna call there self hackers because the script-kiddies had taking there name and proud.

>implying that the term 'hacker' wasn't hijacked by the media to create a social stigma against computing knowledge
Hackers are the people who just love to computer. The great minds behind the Linux kernel are hackers. The people who are fluent in x assembly language and take apart programs for fun. The people who made codebreaker codes for PS2 games. The people who find exploits do it for fun because it's like a puzzle. If you have ever tried looking for instances of where you could hijack eip through the stack, for example, you would know that unless you enjoy doing that, it's very frustrating and extremely time consuming.

>>339Okay if you call yourself a "Hacker" you're just a fucking poser. I don't know a single person who does anything that a textbook definition of a "hacker" would consider themselves or even call themselves a hacker.
Most of us like our technical terms because that's what we're actually good at. I personally am good at Network Exploitation and Penetration.
4 years ago when I was a Sophomore I got caught for putting a keylogger on every computer and sending all the data to a server I owned. It was all through FTP, they just asked my host (Who was in the US) who owned it, and pointed it to me. It did take a bit of Homeland security but after being suspended for a month and the school saying they weren't going to press charges because I was 15, the entire school knew about it, and I was fucking called the "Hacker" every single day. It may seem like a dream to some people but that shit is fucking annoying. Especially when the most autistic people in the school call you a "Master Haxor". Fucking Christ, I'm not even that good. I just exploited and created a keylogging script in Powershell that ran itself through registry. I'm not a fucking God.
Calling people hackers is bullshit, you shouldn't call them hackers because you saw some shit in a movie. If you're Edward Snowden, maybe you should get the title. But other than that, no.
Also OP is a faggot.

See, hackers are like shamans.
Traditionally, you don't call yourself a shaman, ever. You may call your teacher a shaman (and he'll just respond with "nah, I'm not a shaman, that was MY teacher."). Your community might recognize you as a shaman and start calling you that, and most will just politely deny it.
Same goes for hackers. Your peers may one day recognize you as a hacker. But that's up to them, not you. And like a shaman, you'll just politely decline.

in my high, they just blocked everything that wasn't work-related like running executables (because they were all running the essentials like a browser and office) using group policy. Even if I knew how back then I wouldnt try to "hack my school". A keylogger on every computer is going to fill your FTP server with a load of shitty essays and it pisses the IT admins off so why

Well, I have a well paying job and a life. I'm a security researcher and I love it.
And I like to look at shit like this now and then. But yes, lots of even the most successful malicious hackers are shit. I've seen some bad botnet architecture. The guys doing the most harmful shit are generally guys in shitty countries who CAN'T get good jobs, and are stuck jacking money through mass phishing, and running botnets and that sort of shit.
Lots of people who browse this shit suck at security, but some very much don't. It's the same with any security forum. Some people are just interested, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
The only problem I see with some of those types, is that some choose to use tools they have no idea how they work and what's actually going on, and they decide to do stupid shit against real businesses, eventually getting arrested.

This right here. Look at the Defcon, CCC, and Blackhat vids on youtube. These guys jump on stage to get their brag and boast on while shilling for their corporation like it's their home team. Vanity has been the biggest weakness since the late 80s.

Def. Hacker: A Person engaged in the activity of hacking.
Def. Everyone else: Non-hackers not hacking anything
so basically regardless of your shitty or awesome technique what matters in the end is that you're hacking something. it's that simple.
No.695
In addition anyone who tries to tell you some nonsense about how nice safe non-hacking activities like playing with your linux kernel makes you a "hacker" has been drinking the ESR kool-aid too hard and should really STFU and penetrate systems, which is the only true hacking there is. everything else is poser nonsense they tell themselves makes them hackers because they don't have the balls to go out and actually hack something and explore the vastness of the internet. ie. they're posers and you should ignore their idiotic rants.

best post here at least in my own humbled opinion
stop with your shitty "research" and being a fag at defcon. no one cares about that all that matters is actually hacking things. if you aren't out actually breaking into something you aren't a hacker you're just a person on the internet.
