Any suggestions on what to read or do before getting into the material?

I'd advice you to make sure that you're fundamentals are ok. Make sure you can do basic scripting/programming, understand how memory and the internals of computers work, and especially familiarize yourself with the linux environment and its many tricks. This is going to lay a groundwork that you can use to more efficiently develop yourself.

Basically what this guy said learn to script and make sure you know your stuff.
Be expecting people to be in your class that don't know crap.
Read gray hat and violent python those books will really help you.
also if you haven't yet go read up about networking some people on youtube can cover it in a few videos but i prefer to read the Networking for Dummies all in one
Basically read these
Violent Python
Grayhat python
Networking for dummies all in one
cisco networking for dummies
and a linux book like linux+ or some shit
