I heard I can make free phone calls using ham radios, is this still possible?

not a ham, so I don't have experience, but from what I've read…

UHF and VHF repeater stations sometimes have a feature called autopatch, which would allow you to make phone calls if you have a radio that can produce touch tone phone key tones.
whether your local repeaters have this feature or not is up to you to research, as are the repeater station's rules for using the autopatch system.

also, bear in mind that your calls are going to be half duplex, so you'll need to make sure your call receiver knows this and what it implies for conversation flow.

other than that, I'd deferr to a real ham who actually knows what he's talking about

There might still be the occasional HF phonepatch too, but from what I understand is more rare nowdays.

If your thinking about using this for trolling or swatting know this. Ham opps will hunt you down. They make a hobby of triangulating and wrecking even minor offenders, they have more fun at it than baphamet could dream. They will take time off work and travel IRL to hunt you to the ends of the earth.

It's true. I've taken on numerous raids on radio pirates with precision of the likes you've never seen…

But no, seriously… We hams are autistic with rules and will turn pirates in to the authorities the second we can.

Anyway, back on topic… Yes there are phone patches that can be used to make phone calls. However they're extremely rare and are usually found on maritime radio stations.

That might depend on the area and type of pirate. Pirate ham repeaters and be a pest = We hunt you down like the pest you are.

Operate on 27.555 or 6670 and none gives a fuck as long as you don't make noise about it.

I know tons of folks who are hams but also operate EC and CB with their hamgear, but they are polite and professional, not some fucking pests.

And back on the topic, I'm actually interested in making a simple phone patch for playing around. It would be interesting to hook up one of my toy repeaters to google voice or some other VOIP service.

The Air Force regularly uses phone patches over it's HF-GCS network, it's directly tied into AUTOVON/AUTODIN/DSN.
