I didn't see this addressed in the rules so I thought I'd ask. Can I talk about CB stuff here? I know it's faggot stuff, but it's what I have and I enjoy it.

 No.227

This board is so dead that I doubt anyone gives a crap yet. Radio is radio.

Many, but not all hams I know own 11m rigs and many "graduated" to ham radio from 11m.
I own multiple 11m rigs and my FT-897 has been opened up.
And I got on 11m after having my amateur ticket!
Then again, I don't work 27.555 and in general pirate with the ham rig. 11m rig for 11m and ham rig for ham band.

Be polite and be professional and and only faggots will give you shit about operating 11m.

Thanks. I have them in both of my vehicles. I listen more than talk. Still learning this whole thing.

 No.248

Is there anywhere online I can learn about CB repair?

 No.249

>>248
Well there are books but no definite "this is how you fix cb's" website. Most info on how to repair hamrigs translates to cb's as well.
mOre or less all CB's are traditional superhet radios anyway. So they are rather straight forward on the inside.

What about the guys that "peak and tune" them? Is this bullshit or are they going inside the unit and doing something with it? I paid for a peak and tune…hoping I didn't get fucked.

 No.258

>>256
They might actually align them with some test gear. OR more likely, they are gona maxx out all the pots in to a 10usd shit powermeter for MAAAXIMUM SWING AND POWERRR!".
Resulting in a rig that spreads across the channels and sounds like shit.
Many radios actually do benefit from tuning, especially if you are only interested in the legal channels or a single channel.
So it depends on the guy.

I've been told that I sound pretty good so perhaps I did not get fucked. I know linears are illegal, but does anyone really enforce that stuff on mobile units? If one were to make that decision, how would one hypothetically go about doing so? Could one hypothetically do this him or herself having minimal electronics knowledge?

 No.275

>>269

In usa don't even enforce it for bases, multiple +10kW stations are known to exist and multi kW mobiles exist.

Just lowpass filter it and run class-AB for AM/SSB and leave class-c for FM.

And none is going to give a shit as long as you don't interfere outside CB bands

Thats the sad truth.

 No.316

>>275

Hypothetically the plan would be to run like a 100w linear just so someone could be heard more than two miles when their 4x4 is out in the middle of nowhere. I'm assuming nobody would give a shit about that.

 No.317

>>316

Just don't overdrive the amp and use a low pass filter with it and you should be fine.

That way you cause much less potential interference to other radio users.

Most CB amps have shit build quality and completely lack any filtering at the output.

Play it safe and don't be a pest.

 No.364

Seems like a good place to ask this: I'm after a CB hand-held between 1-3 watts, 80 channels, BUT one that uses a generic power plug (e.g. mini or micro USB) and does not require a charging station to charge it. Anyone know of anything like that?

 No.368

>>364

Never seen one with USB/Micro-USB/Mini-USB charging. But seen many with generic barrel plugs and the typical 8.4V or 12V charging. Depending on the model.

you might get 80channels with some Albrecht models for the German or UK markets. Or by widebanding them. Albrecht also has SSB capable 10m/11m handhelds.

For 5V usb charging you are SOL.

Unless you build your own boostconverter (or use something from ebay) to boost the 5V to the charging voltage the rig wants. Or adding it inside the radio.

 No.377

>>368

Thanks for your reply anon, first actual reply I've had to this query in a number of places. As for the USB charging, I thought as much - if it were possible surely one manufacturer would have done it by now…

 No.380

>>377

A manufacturer has done it for VHF handheld radios. But there isn't enough market/ demand/ for CB radios. The handhelds are pretty cheap. Such a battery would cost about as much as the radio itself.

 No.386

>>380

Good CB habdhelds with SSB are easily over 150eur. If a <30eur ((Baofeng(Please see sticky for more information on this radio))(Please see sticky for more information on this radio)) (UV-3R) can do USB charging, then a 150-200eur CB handheld can.

But yeah, no demand.
