Anybody have any experience with professional-grade radios? Pic related - Stuff that's nowhere close to Kenwood's amateur line.

I have used multiple Motorola commercial radios on hambands and they are very solid performers. But you do loose the frequency agility of a ham rig.

What do you mean by "nowhere close to Kenwood's amateur line."?

Commercial radios are usually used on a few fixed channels or in a trunking system.

You don't need keypad frequency entry or APRS style text messages for that.

In many countries the regulations BAN keypad frequency entry for commercial radios and enforce programmed channels only.

Full Disclosure:

I deal Kenwood products.

I moderate this board.

I am not OP(really!)

I use that radio for work, and it's super cool. I'll review some of the features later. Pic. related.

Check out that super bright display!

Build quality, mostly. I don't have personal experience with the NX-5#00 series, but as collateral duties I manage the company radio pool. We've got mostly Kenwood TK-#180's and TK-5#20's, and the build quality compared to their VHF/UHF amateur products is impressive. Most of the TK-#180's are 8+ years old and still going strong.

Does it actually need to backlight the display for daytime/indoor use, and have they finally gotten around to including front-panel programming?

No, it's still visible without it. But in super bright, or dark situations, it comes in handy.

Yes! They have gotten around to include front-panel programming! And it is the best front panel programmable radio I have _ever_ seen.

Everything I've been reading suggests that Kenwood's knocked this one out of the park. The only thing it's missing seems to be DMR support, the array of remote heads Motorola has available for their kit, and a variety of hideously-bright cabinet options.

Where do you work, by the way? You just a dealer or do you also act as a system vendor/service provider?

Sorry. I have to think about that.
