 No.412

Today while hiking, I stood right in front of this big metal square, which I later found out was a radio reflector. It was about 2-2.5km from a 5kw FM transmitter.

Could I get cancer from this?

Pic related: The reflector and the transmitter.

Nope, I was right the first time. It was 5kw.

Sorry for triple posting.

this is a microwave reflector and no you wont get cancer

 No.421

I probably wouldn't stand too close to it.

As

said, it's almost certainly for a microwave link and not broadcast FM. Microwaves are where RF starts to get a little closer to ionizing radiation - There's a lot of debate right now as to whether or not they cause negative effects beyond the thermal heating, and even as to how dangerous the thermal heating really is.

My personal take is that as long as you don't linger too long on the shiny side (opposite of where the photograph is taken) and you don't feel any obvious effects from the RF while you're there, you're almost certainly safe.

The power levels are miniscule. Your cellphone likely dumps more than thousand times power to your head than some transmitter miles away.

A passive microwave reflector is quite neat.

 No.429

You could drag your balls across it and be just fine.

 No.432

First thing I learned about radio waves…

NON IONIZING RADIATION!

Depending on how much power is being shot at that reflector, you might get a burn if you touch it. But other than that, no. No cancer to worry about.

It's a passive reflector for fucks sake!

There is no power at all on it. It Is used to reflect microwaves from some some site miles away ffs.

Your phone dumps literally thousands of times more power in to your body than any position on it or near it.

Okay fine, I was mistaken. Jesus… You don't have to be a giant dumpling about it.

Well it was just the 4th time it was stated that it was safe and not dangerous. Maybe now people will get it.

Misinformation should be combated at every turn :)

"Well it was just the 4th time it was stated that it was" … "dangerous. Maybe now people will get it."

OP here weeks later, I should have clarified that I was joking when I said cancer. I know that RF is non-ionizing and that all the recent freaking out about RF emissions giving you cancer is overblown. I was just wondering if there are any ill effects, like cataracts or other shit if I stand infront of it too long.
