I can't do it! I got my ham ticket. I got my HT. I have a club nearby and they run a net (fat old dudes who put the ham in ham radio).

But I can't speak! I just go real shy. Calling CQ is like freaking me out.

What do? I would prefer HF and try talking to people miles away, but the $$$ of a rig hold me back.

Just say hi. Nothing bad is gonna happen.

Maybe you'd find it easier to get into if you use text modes such as PSK31? You can do it without an SDR, you just need a computer with line in and line out hooked to your transceiver, and a program like fldigi. Depending where you are though it might be hard to find someone else to talk to.

Yeah it's weird. I'd like to talk to people, just not the fat dudes locally.

Well then either linked repeaters, stuff like echolink/IRLP or get on HF.

Depending on where you live you should be able to get some older HF rig for around 250eur. Bouht my first HF rig for 250eur, it was a Icom IC-731.

It if you are not afraid of tubes, then older hybrid rigs are also quite cheap (hybrid like solid state everything else except the power amplifier). I have heard and seen FT-101's going for 150eur.

Then there's also it building and modifying old equipment.

f op is in the usa and is a tech license holder then some "freeband" or "export" cb with ssb that does 10m might be a fine choice for getting on hf.

Or some older 10m only rig like realistic htx-100.

A friend of mine has had great fun with his 10m rig (he's a former 11m freebander so the thing does 10m) and worked all around the states and south America.

So there are low cost options out there.

Just call. it only hurts once. If they give you shit then just turn of the radio and do something else for a moment.

I got my ham ticket just a few days ago and just made my first QSO last night in a net. I was nervous but not so much anymore if you just know that nobody thinks you're such special shit like you think you are. just talk. nobody gives a fuck.
