Shalom /hamradio/, I have a few questions regarding a few projects I have going

1:

How badly would a 1/10th inch plexiglass sheath affect the rx of a QFH antenna? I was thinking that I could make a circular radome for one I'm building to keep water out and make it look a bit nicer.

2: Does a steel coupling nut conduct well enough to be the only contact between two SO-239 or BNC connectors, or should I fill the space inside of it with copper wire or something? I need some double ended connectors I'm making to fit within a two inch deep box, and this is the easiest solution I've come up with.

3: What is /hamradio/'s preferred way of elevating an antenna if I can't stick it to my roof, I'm too cheap to buy a mast, and I don't trust any of my trees not to blow over and rip my shit out through my window?

1.)

It's possible it will very slightly detune it in either direction. It won't be much, if at all.

2.) Solder every electrical connection. But, looking at the QFH antenna, I can't see why you would connect rwo connectors?

3.) Buck up and stick it to your roof anyways :^).

Since you're trying sat work you'll want it to be maneuverable. Just aim it out the window.

If your doing local work, just make a 1/4 wave with ground plane. You'd be surprised how many people don't care about antennas.

Another simple antenna is the slim jim, it has the advantage of having a wider bandwidth http://www.hamuniverse.com/slimjim.html

It's also harder to see.

Picture related

Mount it to a block of wood for the appropriate pitch of the roof. And mount it to the gable of the roof. Paint the wood/ant. the same color as the cable. Staple the coax near the frame of the house. Use spraypaint to change the colour of the coax. Pretty stealth.

I should have mentioned, only my first question involves a OFH antenna, which I'm making for somebody else. Otherwise, I would just put it up myself and not bother with a cover. The reason I want two connectors is for a connector box I'm putting in my window so I can keep holes in my wall to a minimum, and I don't want to put it on my roof since I have a steep roof, and no way to climb it quickly without fucking up the shingles. For the mast, I think I'm just going to buy a modular aluminum one on ebay since they're so cheap, or just make one myself out of aluminum tubes.
