Dlsite has recently started a program where they help creators get into contact with translators so they can get their stuff translated to English.
If this takes off then we might finally get regular access to stuff in English.

Buying Liru if it releases in English could be the thing that gets the ball rolling on this and make other groups interested in translating their stuff.

So the English speaking community is faced with a choice, keep the status quo, keep pirating and keep being reliant on fan translators and machine translators.
OR
Buy it, give something back to the creator and make English translations commercially viable. It wouldn't even take big numbers to get this going, on dlsite 1000 sold is a success, 5000 is a great success and 10000+ and you're instantly on the all time top100 list.

DLsite offers demos on most of their stuff, has fair currency conversion and 90% of their products are DRM free (those that use DRM are clearly labeled).

I think this is a pretty fair deal but I'm worried that Seismic will get burned and be turned off trying anything like this again.

The prevailing attitude among the people who make chinese cartoon porn, both doujin groups and professionals, is simply that all non-japanese, english, chinese, koreans etc are leeches who it's a complete waste of time to worry about.

And I don't blame them.
English patch for monster girl quest had over 500k downloads from the translators blog alone, not counting the hundreds of other places it was available.
Some youtube celebrity made a video about it that has over 1.4 million views, old /v/ sperged about it for months proclaiming it GOTY, better than AAA, what have you. old /vg/ STILL has generals about it.

And how much did all that benefit the creator?
About 3500 sold combined for the trilogy on english dlsite.
Gee, why aren't Japanese creators falling over each other trying to get a piece of that action..

I don't blame them for hating us though. I've been pirating these games for years. My reasoning: why pay for something I can't understand? It's not fair, but that's pirating. I fully intend to buy Dungeons and Prisoners when it releases right after HL3. If they go the extra mile for english fans, they deserve our money. If games I want get translated, I'll buy them.

No, you are exactly right, MGQ was a fan translation. But the translator said himself that he did not want any money and frequently linked to the official sales site. Even if it wasn't an official translation he still made the game.

You have to remember here that the doujinshi "groups" rarely consists of more than one person.
MGQ was made by one person, he hired free lancers for some additional art and voice work.
Rondo duo was made by two people who also hired free lancers for the voices.

They don't have an advertising budget and they don't speak English, their ability to reach out to the English speaking community is very limited.



But yeah, I think this topic of how to bridge the gap between Japanese creators and non-Japanese fans is difficult.

Another thing I'm curious about is how NEKOPARA will do on steam.
The steam version looks to be more expensive, censored and DRM'd while you can get an uncensored, DRM free and better exchange rate version from DLsite.
It could either lead to it getting a bunch of sales on steam and we'll see more censored VNs make it on there or it could possibly draw some more users to DLsite who would like the uncensored version.

About the dlsite translation program.
Any game that is labeled "dlsite trans" has used it. But be aware that the translations are not all very good. The milicream videos for example have spotty translations.
But on the other hand ponidog's "way 2" has a pretty good translation.
So I'm not telling you to indiscriminately throw your money at everything on there (unless you're filthy rich of course).

One Japanese creator who has had decent success is the creator of "parasite in city" as it's an action game with zero dialog.
He has sold 1600 units on the english site which means that english users make up almost 20% of his sales.
He even posts on ulmf with terrible google translate english to ask people what they think of stuff he wants to add in patches.

I'm not sure how they should handle their advertising. What ILL and the Parasite in City creator have done is very smart. A direct communication with their fans. Not every creator is willing or able to do that, but it does seem affective.

I think another problem is this perception among many that internet porn is worthless.
That you should never pay for it.

This explains why people are more willing to donate towards something that might get made in the future (so they can torrent it for "free") rather than actually pay for a finished product.
Akabur gets $7000 per month, Breeding Season gets $24000 per month and neither has shown capacity to deliver a finished product.
And why would they? They don't get paid based on products they finish, they get paid based on hype towards what they're making next.
I would not be at all surprised if Hermonie trainer, when/if it finally finishes, has one scene glaring with it's absence (similar to Lola in princess trainer) with the promise that it will be finished "later" as long as you keep donating.

Meanwhile Japan has a healthy industry with multiple competing outlets both digital and physical that sell products of multiple competing creators who get's paid if they deliver a good product.
It's not like the Japanese don't pirate stuff, check any torrent on nyaa and you'll see plenty of Japanese IPs, the difference is that they ALSO buy stuff.

In the west maybe, but Japan has a fully functioning porn game industry valued at around $200 million a year.
Top games on DLsite(the japanese part) can easily make $100k or more in a year. And DLsite deals 90% in indie games, the games made by full time professionals, like artificial academy, make millions.

The issue is that western people who are interested in porn games in english has to become mature enough to stop paying into sketchy patreons and instead pay into a real market system.

People are less likely to spend money on porn games for a huge amount of reasons. Hell, some people think that any kind of drawn art is pedophile in nature.

Not to mention, most of the best porn games out there happen to be free or are big enough to be able to work through donations alone… It's hard to compete with that.


The patreon artists who make the most money are furry-related, though, aren't they? Furries seem to have a shitton of money and don't really care where they'd drop it, plus they have a lot less options.

neko para has sold over 3000 from dlsite, if translated games could regularly fetch that kind of numbers then that would easily make it worth it to translate all but the most word intensive games.
i'm hoping that the liru animation (if translated) is able to bring in similar numbers as neko para, that would really get the ball rolling with two big english language successes just after each other.
I'm lurking various developer blogs and trust me, they're noticing, several are playing with the idea of paying for a translation.
all english speakers got to do is put down $10 on a game in english from there every now and then to show that there is interest and that it is worth it, it's not complicated.

people just have to understand that WE are the english speaking market for porn games, there won't suddenly be a huge influx of mainstream buyers funding all your lewd translations so you can pirate them for free.
The people lurking these type of forums are the people who have to put down $10 every now and then to fund the games.

95% of what's discussed on this board was not made for free, including Liru, Seismic previous two releases has made about $200,000
What it comes down to is if english speakers are happy with machine translations and the occasional fan translation or not.
Because the moment there is good money to be made in translating hentai games then someone will do it.

It's not a matter of them being able to afford to translate their works to english, it's a matter of whether it's profitable or not, they're not running a charity, they're not doing it for free.

They make plenty of money, they don't need western customers to live.
But western customers needs to prove that they are a viable market IF they want doujinshi authors to invest in translations.
If an official translation of Liru sells a bunch then Seismic can easily justify investing more money in getting his older and future works translated.
