Oh, and by the way board admin, should I refrain from greentext aside from use as headers/list bullets?

My personal favourite conductor, and perhaps the last great Wagnerian. Not my favourite composer by a long chalk - that would be Purcell - but stuff from the romantic era tends to be a lot more "immediately" powerful, especially to the casual listener.

You don't need a knowledge of musical form and convention, historical context, or even the story behind this scene to enjoy it (unlike a lot of baroque stuff).

Such knowledge will of course elevate one's appreciation and enhance overall enjoyment, however.

To embed you paste the link into the "Embed" field, friend.

Also, thanks for posting this piece– I really enjoyed it.

Incredibly bouncy for its time, a drawn out exercise of the mandolin. Some might find this cacophonic but I think it's incredibly enjoyable.

I have that symphony on vinyl. I bought it for 50 cents at a flea market when I had no idea who Shostakovich was. Now hes my favorite composer.

I liked the opening. Openings for symphonies dont get much better than that.

Symphony 8 is my favorite though. Its terrifying and I love scary, tense orchestral pieces. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52pn_d2bE3A

Great find; there was a BBC series on the English Renaissance and they played that.
